Boarding Schools

Boarding Schools

Boarding schools are a boon for many parents. These schools provides stability to the children of parents who are continuously relocating. There are pros and cons of boarding school. The decision to send a child to a boarding school should not be taken in haste. Weigh the pros and cons before deciding on a boarding school.

In India, many parents are faced with the boarding school enigma. Should we or shouldn't we send our children away from us? Clearly, boarding schools present a more varied set of challenges when it comes to teen development, both for parents and children. Often, parents that relocate to different places due to work opt for boarding schools to remove discontinuities in their child's education. It can be emotionally unsettling for teens to repeatedly leave their friends and familiar surroundings behind. Thus, boarding school provides a greater level of stability in terms of the overall educational and social environment for the teen. Moreover, boarding schools offer ample extra-curricular activities that allow teens to better explore their interests and potential. Many people who went to non-residential schools lament the fact that their teachers did not know them well enough to contribute more effectively to their overall development.

However, parents that send their teens to boarding schools have fewer day-to-day interactions and significantly less time to spend with their teens during their formative years. As a result, many parents complain that they could not fully and effectively contribute to the teen's development due to time and proximity constraints. On the other hand, teachers in boarding schools complain that they do not get enough support from parents who tend to rely excessively on the school. Above all, many boarding school alumni have one predominant complaint - homesickness.

The boarding school decision clearly must account for a large number of factors. The particular teen's personality, emotional needs, the quality and environment of the boarding school being considered, the type of the school (co-ed or single-sex), the distance, the parents' commitment to staying in touch with the child are some of the concerns that need to be accounted for in the decision. The ultimate decision will clearly be based on the individual analysis of the family given their own unique needs and circumstances. It must be noted that the boarding school decision is not a zero sum game. Parents must be forthright enough to pull their teen out of boarding schools if they realize that it is not working out well for the child.

The boarding school debate is endless. Without a doubt, the decision to send teenagers to boarding schools should be based on a thoughtful analysis of the child in question in light of the unique challenges associated with growing up away from home. To provide you a reference point, we offer the following list of some prominent pros and cons with regards to boarding schools.

This is a very nicely written article, and you have enumerated the pros and cons of a boarding school in an easy to understand manner. In India, parental attitudes and perspectives have undergone dramatic changes over the years, and they are now becoming increasingly willing to let their sons and daughters become independent and self-sufficient at an early age. That being said, a boarding school provides children with not just the highest standards of education, but a host of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. I came across a very interesting article about how boarding schools give children a complete education, and what really stood out to me was the fact that children with a boarding school education tend to fare better in university and their professional lives.

These days parents are very selective in choosing the right school for their children in terms of quality education, co-curricular activities, facilities, etc. They want their children to attend a school that exposes them to various extra-curricular activities from an early age, besides the basic education. My daughter have been studying at Candor International School since 3 years and we can see great progress in them. Their performance has not just improved academically but also in activities.

both good and bad exist with boarding school. be sure that you are sending your child to an environment that is exactly what you expect. we sent our daughter to brenau and regret ever doing so. she has been exposed to people that we would never let her associate with. worst of all the school wants no parental evolvement and the staff is less than supportive of the students. emotionally they are on their own, learn self doubt and to trust nobody. so if you don't care about your child and want to get rid of them...... send them to brenau!

i attended the academy at ivy ridge from december 3rd 2002 until augutst 11th 2003. it wus the worst 8 and a half months of my life. i saw many kids abused through over excessive restraints by staff and administration literally beat kids in separate rooms. geroge tulip, "chef dave" and mr. finlinson where the most feared people in the building. the academy at ivy ridge is a scam for desperate parents money. i never really recieved any credit for all the classes i completed there and i was way behind my peers reguular curriculum at home so no wi am struggling in school. i believe that air has given me a new persepective on life and how it was in there but really nobody shoudl be subjected to that and i am still goin through therapy now to get closure with myself and air.
