Why Do Girls Mature Earlier than Boys?

Why Do Girls Mature Earlier than Boys?

What are the factors responsible for the early maturity of girls? Have a quick look at the social and scientific factors that are responsible for the early maturity of girls.

Do girls mature earlier than boys? If yes then why so? To answer this question we first need to understand what maturity is. In simple words, maturity means growing up. Reaching its full development is maturity. In psychology the ability to respond to environment in an appropriate manner is maturity.
When a person knows how to adapt himself or herself to his or her surrounding and know how to behave or act in a given situation, knows how to adjust with his or her surroundings, we may say that he or she is mature. To put it in a more simple form when an individual is capable of taking his or her own decisions, then he or she is said to have attained maturity.
If we take into consideration the biological factor, then we may say that girls mature at an early age than boys. This is because girls reach their puberty at the age of about 8-12 years where as the boys hit puberty at around 9-14 years. This means that the girls achieve their adolescence at least a year ahead than boys.

Social Factor

Sometimes it is the society which is responsible for the girls attaining maturity earlier than boys. In this case we are mainly concerned about the mental maturity. Along with physical maturity girls attain their mental maturity earlier than boys. This may be because, since their early childhood they are ingrained with the idea that they need to be accustomed to the social norms and they need to act in a certain manner that the society expects from them.
Our social norms represent the cutting and pruning of the female desires in order to fit them in the patriarchal social structure. Like the bonsais, the girls are also not allowed to grow freely. They are burdened with various responsibilities at a very young age which may be the reason for their attaining early maturity which is not in the case of the boys who are allowed to be themselves and are not restricted in any way. They become mature only when they have to shoulder the responsibility of running their family which is after their marriage.

Scientific Factor

According to a new study, a girl’s brain integrates itself 2-3 years earlier than a boy’s brain. This may also prove that girls mature at an early age than boys.

Psychological Factor

Researchers at Newcastle University in the U.K have found that the girls mature earlier than boys because their brains can recognise the connectors in their brain more quickly than the boys. This may also be one of the reasons why the girls attain their maturity earlier than boys.

Women May Mature Earlier but Men Mature Faster

Though women mature earlier than men but men reach the peak of their maturity at the age of 43 while women reach the peak of their maturity 11 years earlier. This means that men mature faster than women

Obligations

From the above discussion it is evident that girls mature earlier than boys. Besides the Biological and the scientific reason, the sociological reason is very important and must be taken into consideration. Since time immemorial women have been instructed by the society to belong to someone. They do not have a voice or opinion of their own and are burdened with social and filial obligations.
It may therefore be concluded that girls attain their maturity at an early level and exhibit social, psychological and emotional maturity more than the boys. This sometimes led the society to expect more from them. So any behavioural fault on the part of women is not acceptable by the society. But we cannot excuse hurtful and irresponsible behaviour from the men on the pretext of their late maturity. This would lead to discrimination between both the genders.

At what age do girls and boys attain maturity? Why do girl attain maturity earlier than boys? How to prevent early puberty in children? Discuss here.
