Effects of Being Uninvolved with Kids

Being uninvolved with kids can result in many developmental issues in kids. Let us take a quick look at the harmful effects of being uninvolved with kids.

The style of uninvolved parenting has been identified by parents as one of being much disengaged and emotionally unavailable towards children. Expressions of love and warmth are rarely demonstrated.

Some child psychologists say that being uninvolved with kids is very low in the aspect of parental responsiveness and parental warmth. Often such parents are only concerned with providing material comfort to their kids. Here are the negative aspects that are associated with uninvolved parenting style and the future repercussions in kids.

Development of a Feeling of Unimportance

With regular demonstration of parental non involvement and lack of warmth the child begins to perceive that he or she is not important to the parent. This may lead to two equally dangerous and negative psychological reactions. Either the child withdraws emotionally from the parent and loses respect and love for the bond between them. Otherwise the child may develop a rebellious attitude which is wilfully disrespectful as showing this type of behaviour is a way of trying to gain importance from parents.

Withdrawing From Social Situations

One of the majorly observed effects in kids of uninvolved parents is a sense of becoming withdrawn and aloof. In normal social situations kids feel awkward as the lack of warmth demonstrated by parents has eaten away their self esteem and feelings of self worth.

In many cases the children begin to feel that since their own parents do not show love and affection towards them; others will also think of them as undesirable and unwanted. This naturally makes them withdraw themselves from situations which involve lots of people and big groups.

Increased Chances of Substance Use

Often kids with emotionally unavailable parents develop an emotional void and an intense yearning to feel involved with a project or a group. Often this takes a very negative turn as kids become drawn towards addictive substances like cigarettes, alcohol and drugs along with other types of substance abuse.

The substances which promote addiction also induce a feeling of false happiness and an indifference to other kinds of problems in their lives. However, all these kinds of addictive substances slowly damage the health and psychiatric condition of children and spiral them towards a socially unacceptable life. In case you see children who are slowly being sucked into substance abuse, it is imperative that you take a step to send them for professional counselling.

Absence of Self Control

Children who are brought up by parents who have shown little or no emotional warmth towards them develop a multitude of psychological problems. The primary one amongst them is developing a severe lack of self control when faced with even mildly stressful situations.

This could manifest in ugly brawls at school, irrational outbursts at playmates and even physical fights. This happens because such kids have not learnt to resolve difficult emotional situations with socially acceptable techniques. Such children need to be specifically trained in anger management and stress management as lack of intervention will merely lead to an escalation of such issues in future.

Anxiety and Nervousness

Children who have not received love and affection from their parents often try extremely hard to capture their attention. Repeated failure to attract the desired affection from their parents disappoints children and makes them wonder about their inability to get love. This also promotes feelings of nervousness and anxiety that actually stems from a strong desire to please.

With repeated demonstration of lack of involvement on part of parents it is natural for the negative feelings of nervousness and anxiety to grow stronger. In the long run this hampers the personal and professional development of children.

As parents you need to be constantly aware of the emotional needs of your children if you want them to lead healthy and fulfilled lives.

What are the effects of being uninvolved with kids? Why is parental involvement necessary? How can parents improve their involvement with their kids? Discuss here.
