Wrong messages can get conveyed to kids if parents do not follow the right way to talk to them. Here are some things which you should remember while talking to your kids. Read on and find out how not to talk to your kids.Parents indulge in lots of unnecessary talks with their kids most of the time. They also complain that their children are not listening to them. Many a time children do not understand what their parents want to convey to them. This can have a negative repercussion. There are many things you must avoid doing while talking to kids.
Do Not Give Long Lectures
Children do not like to hear long lectures and reasoning. Do not elaborate or dwell too much on some issue. Make your conversations short and to the point. Use words that they understand. Avoid giving long justifications. Your child may not understand some of your instructions well. Be clear in your
communication. Make sure that your child understands what you are trying to say. At times they do not seem to hear or understand you. Your long explanations can confuse them further and become more complicated.
Do Not Be Impatient
Patience is the virtue of parenthood. Sometimes your kid’s questions to you could be so challenging. Try to answer his questions patiently in the best possible way. Children are quite inquisitive. They want to know so many things. You may not know the answers to the many of their queries. Tell your child you will get back on the subject, as soon as you find the answer. In a hurry to cut short your conversation, never misguide your child. Do not help children with their tasks when they are slow.
Be Patient and wait for them to finish it themselves. By helping your children to do simple things you are making them dependent on you. However, use your judgement and jump-in when they really need your help.
Do Not Be Argumentative
When you tell something to your child, he or she may argue at times. Be firm in your instruction. Children have their own opinions on certain things and to prove that they are right, they may argue endlessly. You need to set a limit to such arguments. Do not be judgemental because at times their opinions may not be theirs. They may be sharing what they heard in school or from their friends. Use minimum words. Listen to your child. They may have something very important to share with you. But, do not prolong the argument in any case.
Do Not Praise Excessively
Praising a child could be encouraging, but
too much of praise can actually affect your child’s ability to perform well. Praising when not required ceases its importance. Praise them when they have achieved something. Some parents think it is important to tell their children that they are intelligent. Refrain from daily praises like “you are most intelligent” or may be “you are the best”. Such praises can de-motivate a child to work hard. Their target automatically becomes low. This results in decrease in their performance level. Children also get used to such praises and look forward to constant praise from their parents.
Do Not Be Rude
Sometimes your
child’s behaviour could be so irritating to you. It is quite normal for a child to act irritatingly. They do have mood swings. It is a part of their growing up. When you yell at children and are rude, they may get a message that you do not love them. Make your children understand that you dislike their actions and not them. You need to tell them that you love them. Understand why your child is behaving that way. Try understanding your child. Be compassionate and kind.
Parenting is not an easy task. Communicating with your child can be the greatest challenge you could be facing. While you keep in mind
how to talk to your kids, you also need to follow how not to talk to kids. Enjoy your conversations with your child and connect well.
