How to Tell a Story

Learn exciting and interesting ways to tell a child a story. Follow these ideas and watch your child wait eagerly for story-time everyday. Learn how you can make story time a joyful and fascinating affair for your child.

Story telling is a time most children love. You may have often heard children telling you 'Papa, please tell me a story'. Even if they have heard the same story many times, they will keep begging you to tell it again. Small children love bedtime stories.
Parents can try and make the story-telling experience as real as possible. Make story-telling sessions as memorable as possible for your kids.
Story telling can be made more interesting and exciting for children in many ways like the following-

Enacting the Story

If you have many adults in the house, you can enact the story together for the child. Enacting of stories is a good way to make the child remember the story well. Enacting is always more effective than plain reading. When the story is enacted like a skit, the child absorbs it better and sometimes remembers the small details clearly too.
Enacting is also entertaining to the child and form of recreation for the entire family. It helps the family members to bond more with each other and also with the child.

Take care on what kind of Stories you tell them.

Try to avoid telling stories which may make the child feel scared. Often when we tell the child stories of monsters or ghosts, it makes them scared. They are small and may even end up believing that monsters and ghosts do exist.
While telling stories to children, telling things like a monster hides under beds when it is dark, may actually scare them and make them afraid of the dark. Stories involving monsters and ghosts may sound amusing to adults but to children, it is all very real. Telling them funny stories and stories which do not involve too much violence and fear is always better.

Using of Props while Enacting

If you are enacting the story of 'Cinderella' for your child and are at the part where the fairy godmother waves her magic wand to create gowns and a carriage out of the thin air, prepare a prop for better effect!
Make a small simple magic wand with the help of a small stick, cloth, cardboard, sketch-pens, sparklers, etc. Making props need not be an expensive affair, it can be simple too.
Ultimately that look of sheer joy in your child's eyes when he sees you enacting the whole story with props and everything will be just priceless!

Voice Modulation

While telling a story, it is important that you don't go on reading in a monotonous voice as it can become dull then. Vary your speed of talking and tone according to the emotions and situations in the story.

Using the Computer

If your children are too small to understand meanings of words like alien, iceberg, rocket etc show them pictures from the internet. If you are telling a story about a diver who jumps into the water to rescue a drowning boy, it is possible that your child may not understand the meaning of diver or what a diver looks like. At such times, you can take the help of the internet.
You can search for suitable images from the internet and show them to your child. This will help your child understand what a diver looks and dresses like. This will be a learning experience for your child and will make him informed and knowledgeable about many things at a young age itself. It will also help him to progress intellectually.

Don't find fault in childish questions

While telling the story, your child may ask some questions! The questions might be very silly and even amusing. Whatever it is answer, without hurting the feelings of the child. Don't laugh at any question or tell them that it is stupid of them to ask that! Making fun of a child's questions can damage his confidence.

After telling the story

After telling your child the story, ask them to re-tell it and explain it. This will help you understand how well they have understood the story and it also improves their communication skills.
Sometimes you may have told a child a story which has an important message and lesson. It may be important to you that they follow and cultivate those morals and values in life. Ask the child to explain the moral and lesson they have learnt from the story to check if they have indeed grasped it.
Thus, using these ways you can make story-time an exciting affair for your kids which they will cherish and remember for many more years to come!
