What is Driving My Child's Behaviour?

There are times when many of you find it difficult to figure what is driving your child’s behaviour. Well, there are many reasons behind any child misbehaving and to find this out you need to understand few things. Read on to learn what drives your child’s behaviour at times and what can you do to correct it.

It may be hard to believe that your child’s behaviour is changing and even after a lot of corrections, he is not ready to pay attention to your instructions. Well, no matter what age your child is, there are many reasons why that might be changing. Just keep in mind that no child is born with bad behaviour, they rather develop it with time.
Therefore, it is important for you as a parent to find out exactly what is driving your child’s behaviour so that an amicable solution can be worked out.

Common Reasons behind Change in Child’s Behaviour

Have a quick look at the common causes behind your child’s changed behaviour.

  1. Trying to Seek Attention

This is quite common in children. They intentionally misbehave so that you pay attention towards them. Most of the parents respond by beating or disciplining the child as a response to such behaviour. This is not right. Instead you should give the child lots of attention when he is behaving well so that he gets the right message.
  2. Feeling Uncomfortable

When a child is unable to explain his discomfort he is likely to behave badly. The discomfort can be anything from feeling bored to not feeling well. You will have to figure out the problem and do what is needed so that the child becomes comfortable.
  3. Wanting to Feel Valued

Children, just like adults, need to feel that they are valued. Make sure that your child is not neglected at the time of family circles or when friends and relatives are around.
  4. Toy or an Eatable or a New Dress

When children need toys, eatables, new dresses or something else, they throw tantrums and misbehave especially when they know their parents’ attention is somewhere else. Without using violence and by rewarding good behaviour you can correct bad behaviour.
  5. Lack of Praise

Usually all parents punish bad behaviour but always forget to praise good ones. If you will notice and praise good behaviour and performance, your child will develop good habits.
  6. Feeling Disappointed

Sometimes children misbehave because they are disappointed on something. You should find out what the reason is and craft a good solution for that as soon as possible.
  7. Imitating Someone

Children easily get influenced by others and may develop bad habits simply by imitating someone. If you find this, immediately take notice and try to rectify the problem.

How to Deal With Behavioural Problems in Children

  • Understand the reason behind your child’s behaviour.
  • Find out where and when the child starts misbehaving.
  • Concentrate on present.
  • Be clear and precise when explaining things to children.
  • Use criticism that helps, not hurts.
  • Become a role model for your child.
  • Set behavioural goals.
  • Motivate and encourage your child towards behaving well.
Once you become aware of the reasons behind your child’s crazy or unnatural behaviour, it is very important you work out a practical plan that can help you deal with the behavioural problem in your child. Just keep in mind that this will take some time and you need to be consistent and have patience all through this period.
Sometimes when children misbehave parents lose their patience. Well, here you need to focus on your behaviour too. After all your child will do what you do because children automatically follow their parents. May be if you shift to become a calm parent, the problem might get solved.

Why do children misbehave or behave differently? How to reinforce positive behaviour in children? Is punishing the right way to deal with misbehaviour in children? Discuss here.

I normally lose my control whenever my child misbehave and sometimes tend to beat him. But, after reading this article I understood that beating or shouting at them will never make them to be disciplined. I have planned to make him in a better way using the tips as suggested above.

If my daughter sees her friend having some toy she will immediately start demanding for it. Her behaviour wont settle unless we get her that toy. She is behaving very badly, I do not know what to do.

We we go out and when our child sees some toy he will start misbehaving to get it. Sometimes he will ask for very expensive things which we can not even afford.
