How to Get Your Kids Listen to You

How to Get Your Kids Listen to You

Most children do selective hearing and this is one of the biggest problems that parents face. It becomes really very difficult to teach your child discipline if he either stubbornly refuses to obey or ignores you. Read on to learn how you can get your kids listen to you.

Parenting is one of the most difficult tasks in the world. When things go right and kids understand and start listening to you, you need not worry. But as soon as they start ignoring you, it becomes difficult to keep calm. The biggest mistake that parents do here is either they yell or preach them for 10 - 15 minutes each time. This often makes things worse.

Ways to Get Your Kids Listen To You

Have a quick look at some tips to get your kids listen to you.

Make Things Clear

No matter what the situation is you should make it clear to your kids what exactly you want him to do. You should use clear commands and try to be to the point. Limit your instruction to few important words and see the effect. Avoid accusing, criticizing, threatening and even generalizing situations.

Mind the Tone of Your Voice

The way you say a certain thing is more important than what you are saying. Use encouraging and positive tone when you are giving any kind of instruction to your kid. Make sure you avoid nagging. Ask once nicely, second time firmly and then third time take action with warning.

Body Language

When you need to give instructions you should either come closer or call your child to come to you. Do not shout from another room. Try to get down to your child’s height and have eye contact when you want him to listen to you. You can also make him repeat so that he remembers what he has to do.

Make Your Child Understand

If your child repeatedly disobeys you at some point, you should provide him with the right information so that he knows exactly why you ask him to do specific work. For example, if your child does not flush the toilet after use, you can say, toilet gets stinky when it is not flushed immediately.

Let Your Child Decide

Sometimes kids just do not listen to parents. You inform your kid about the consequences of disobeying you and then let him decide what to do. You can also talk firmly to him if he still ignores your instruction.

Listen to Your Kids

When you expect your child to listen to you, you need to be a good listener too. Even though you have lots of pressure as a parent, you should pay attention to what your kids are saying because most of the kids tend to ignore when they feel that their parents never listen to what they say.

Careful listening shows that you care for your child and you are concerned about his feelings also. When you start listening to your kids you will find that various problems evaporate almost instantly. Most important of all if you listen to your child, he will listen to you.

  • Pay full attention to what your child is saying. Turn to your child and listen to him by making eye contact.
  • Do not give blank look. Acknowledge what your child is saying by giving one word or at least by nodding.
  • If your child is telling you about something that happened in school or while playing with other kids, there is a feeling hidden behind words. Try to identify and name it.

While keeping in mind and using the above tips to make your child listens to you, you should also praise and reward cooperation. Remember, the process should be full of warmth and enthusiasm.

What should be done when kids stop listening to their parents? Is it correct to punish the child if he or she does not listen to his or her parents? What are effective ways to get kids to listen to parents? Discuss here.

It is very difficult to get kids listen to you when you over pamper them, give them whatever they want. Most of the kids at some point or the other ignore their parents.

Hi Jyotsana, yelling is not going to help. Just control your anger and count till 10 if you feel like yelling at your kids.

It is very annoying when kids do not listen to me. I cannot control my self and I start yelling at them when they ignore me.
