Kids at a tender age are usually found to be averse to
attending preschool for the first time. This is a common problem with kids and
experts believe that it can be effectively dealt with if the fear is about the preschool
is removed from their minds. Children do not really enjoy drastic and complete
change of environment. Here are a few suggestions on how the parents can
encourage the child to attend preschool with lesser trouble.
Getting the Child
Acquainted
You need to create the atmosphere of the preschool and start
practicing the activities that are a part of the curriculum there in the house.
This will acquaint the child
with the new atmosphere that he is going to be a part of and also have a clear
idea of what he is expected to do there. This is how you do it:
Reading Sessions
Give your child a daily experience of reading from story
books. Visit with your kid to the nearest library or bring in some books for
him. It works better if your kid has a reading table with a chair and a bookshelf
of his own. There should be some reading options as well. Like different types
of children’s story books, comic stripes, fairy tales, superhero tales and also
science fiction tales for kids. Encourage him to exercise his choice. It will
enhance the memory and analytical skills of the kid.
Engage in a Book Talk
This should be a discussion session where you must encourage
the child to air his views and opinions on the story they have just read. Ask
them to talk about things they liked and disliked and the reason behind it. Ask
them to relate the stories
with their own experiences in a simple fashion. This can be interestingly done
through questions like “who walks like that?” or “remember, who acts like
that?” this will excite them and make this session an enjoyable one.
Engage in Extended
Discussion
The discussion can go beyond books in a separate session.
Encourage the kid to tell personal stories like any event or about a person
that they would like to talk about and things that interest them. This should
be a responsive conversation where the kid should feel free with his
expressions. Work on complex sentences and vocabulary structure.
Language Games
Language games
are an extension of the reading session. This activity can have poems, songs,
stories that have alliteration, repetitive rhymes in a
certain fashion and finger-plays. This will help the children to work on the
language and when done in group, it will be even more exciting.
Writing Session
Your kid’s desk must have a writing section that has all the
required materials. Ask them to write specific letters and words when it is
time for them to learn the alphabets. But apart from this encourage them to
write and express what they have to say. This will enhance their writing skills,
grasp the language better, and enhance their vocabulary and motor skills too.
Drama or Play Session
This should be a fun session where the kids enact stories
and events from the books they have read or you can also suggest them to stage
a play. Help them with the simple props and makeup. Add music and puppets so
that they enjoy a wholesome experience as well as learn the mechanism on how
things take place in a fun way. Role play will help them memorize dialogues and
interact in a group.
Finally, remember as you introduce the child to these
activities, and he discovers in his first visit to the preschool that he is
already aware of what is going on there, he will be looking forward to his
admission and be all the more excited as he would be having new friends as
well! There will be no fear of the unknown.
