Week 3: Conception Takes Place

Conception takes place during the 3rd week of pregnancy. Read on to understand the process of conception and symptoms experienced after the implantation of the fertilized egg.

What Happens during the Conception?

Conception or fertilization takes place when a sperm from the male fuses with the ovum to form a single cell that ultimately becomes your baby. This cell multiplies into over a hundred cells and travels along your fallopian tube until it reaches the uterus by approximately the fourth day after fertilization.

What Happens after Fertilization?

About thirty hours after fertilization, the fertilized cell divides into two, and ten hours after this it further divides into four identical cells, each getting smaller by each division. Within three days it has become sixteen in number as it continues its travel up the fallopian tube. On the fourth day the fertilized egg has multiplied into over a hundred cells and is still growing fast. The egg now has a fluid-filled centre but looks like a solid round mass as it enters the uterus. It is still invisible to the naked eye.

What is Blastocyst?

The blastocyst, as the egg is now called, is made up of two layers that eventually become the placenta and the embryo. It floats about in the womb getting its nourishment from the secretion of glands situated in the lining of the uterus. By the end of this week, it will attach itself to the thickening lining of the womb by a process known as implantation that signals the completion of conception.

What Happens after the Implantation?

You may experience slight bleeding or spotting now. The uterus lining gets thicker and the cervix gets plugged by mucus. This stays till the baby is born.
The cells shall start growing as clumps and your baby shall start forming her first nerve cells.
There shall be a surge of the HCG hormone from the time of your conception. Pregnancy tests can help detect presence of this hormone. It takes around a month for the HCG levels to be high enough in your blood to be detected in the tests.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Implantation?

Once you realise the onset of your pregnancy, here are some common signs and symptoms that you might experience. Here are discussed some of the typical signs:
  1. Implantation cramps are experienced commonly by many women. These uterine cramps are very common and you need not worry about them.
  2. Bleeding or spotting as discussed before can be another symptoms of implantation. It generally happens around 7 days after the ovulation.
  3. Increase in the basal body temperature also confirms your ovulation is complete.
  4. Body temperature may dip for more than a single day. This too is very common around 7 days after ovulation.
There is no need to feel depressed if you do not experience any of these symptoms. If you are not sure about your pregnancy, you can always make an appointment with your doctor and confirm your case.
You need to remember that signs and symptoms of pregnancy tend to vary from one woman to the other. While the symptoms can be very severe among some women, it can be very mild in others. Nausea, tenderness of breasts and combination of many other symptoms can be experienced by many in the initial stages of pregnancy. Some of the other symptoms that are commonly experienced include increased sensitivity to smell, frequent urge to urinate, aversions and certain tiredness.
These signs and symptoms are a combination of several factors and thus you should not be worried. The best part is, all these should be gone with the arrival of your little bundle of joy. Remember, everybody is unique and it is natural to have different experiences in each pregnancy.
However, make sure to take enough rest, good food and take all the vitamin and folic acid supplements. Enjoy to the fullest and discuss with doctor all your concerns and queries.
Good luck for your pregnancy!
