Having Sex During Pregnancy

Having Sex During Pregnancy

Having sex during pregnancy is absolutely fine, if you follow some basic guidelines. However, in some situations having sex may not be advisable during pregnancy. Read on to find when having sex during pregnancy is safe or unsafe.

The subject of sex during pregnancy is a controversial one. There are many views and opinions on whether pregnant women should or should not have intercourse.

Inclination towards sex during pregnancy depends on various factors such as:

  • Beliefs of both the woman and her partner about sex.
  • Emotional state during pregnancy.
  • Physical condition during pregnancy.
  • Past history like previous miscarriages

Sex during pregnancy is normally more enjoyable. This is because of an increase in vaginal lubrication, lack of birth control measures like the condom and engorgement of the genital area.

For some women, sex during pregnancy is not enjoyable. This may be due to feelings of awkwardness, due to pregnancy symptoms such as nausea or fatigue and the fear of baby getting hurt.

Hence, if for any reason if the pregnant woman does not feel like having sex it is essential to discuss the issue openly with her partner to get over fears and apprehensions.

During pregnancy there are a number of hormonal changes happening in the body which plays a crucial role in the woman’s reactions to making love, as do the trimesters. For example during the first trimester nausea can cause many women to lose interest in sex. Similarly, during the second trimester since the body grows and the baby bump starts showing sex may cause physical discomfort.

When Not to Have Sex During Pregnancy?

It is best to avoid having intercourse in the following situations.

  • Your doctor advises against it.
  • You already have a history of premature labour or birth.
  • When part of the placenta happens to cover the cervix. This condition is known as Placenta Previa.
  • When the water breaks.
  • When you experience bleeding.
  • In case you or your partner happens to suffer from an STD - sexually transmitted disease.

Sex Positions Suitable for Pregnant Women

There are a number of sex positions which are comfortable for pregnant women. These include:

  • Woman on Top Position - This is the most comfortable position for a pregnant woman. In this position, the woman has the complete control. She can control the angle of penetration and also the depth or intensity. In later stages of pregnancy due to increase in size of the abdomen, this position may not seem comfortable.
  • Hands and Knees Position - This position is commonly known as “doggy style.” In this sex position, the woman is on her hands and knees and the man comes from behind her. This position is most comfortable during the first two trimesters of pregnancy but in the third trimester it may become uncomfortable due to increasing belly size.
  • Side Lying, Knee Pulled up Position – It is a very relaxing and enjoyable position. In this sex position, the partners lie face to face but lying on the right side should be avoided. This position allows more intimacy.
  • Spooning (Man behind woman, rear entry) - In this position the male as well as the female face the same direction and lie on their same sides, with the man behind the woman. This position is the best position for pregnant women as the the couple does not put weight on each other.

Use of Lubricating Gels or Creams

Lubricating creams or gels are capable of causing skin irritation and allergic reactions. Hence, it is best not to use these during pregnancy unless advised by your doctor. In fact make it a point to clean your vaginal area thoroughly after sex. Keep the entire area dry by wiping with a dry clean towel or tissue paper.

A Word of Caution

Most doctors recommend abstinence from the sixth to the twelfth week of the pregnancy, since it can cause miscarriage. Similarly, abstinence is recommended during the last two months of pregnancy as well. During this period intercourse increases the risk of essential amniotic fluid leaking out thereby causing complications.

Conclusion

Physical as well as mental changes are rampant during pregnancy. Hormones can play havoc and impact your thinking too. Physically while a pregnant woman may feel large and uncomfortable, her partner may feel the pregnant body very desirable and erotic. Hence, it is important for the couple to discuss their differences and attitudes about having sex during pregnancy to sort out the matter amicably.
