Caffeine during Pregnancy

Caffeine during Pregnancy

Are you pregnant and cannot do without your morning brew of coffee? Find out how caffeine during pregnancy can affect the pregnancy and harm the foetus.

Your daily cup of morning brew of coffee may not really be a good idea when you are pregnant. Caffeine can be just a habit or an addictive one on a serious note, since its hyper stimulating property is not good for either conception or the growing foetus inside your womb. There have been numerous researches on how caffeine spells disaster on pregnant women due to its diuretic properties.

The Harmful Aspects of Caffeine

Restricts Vital Nutrients

When you are pregnant, you need to take care of your nutritional levels and stay healthy. Regular intake of caffeine restricts you from doing just that. Calcium and other vital pregnancy nutrients get washed out from your system by the caffeine. These nutrients thus do not get the chance to even get absorbed by the body, even if you are regularly including them in your diet.

Frequent Urination

When you are pregnant, you will urinate frequently. This is why you need to keep your system adequately hydrated, so that the frequent urination does not negatively impact your body. Regular intake of caffeine makes you visit the loo more often.

Aggravated Mood Swings

Caffeine is preferred for being a stimulant. But when you are pregnant, this can render a harmful effect as well. The mood swings may not always be very delightful; it can make you impulsive and intense, which is surely not a preferred state to be in. It can erode your motivated state of mind as well.

The Harm That Caffeine Cause to the Foetus

The stimulant cannot be handled by the foetus –
  • If you are confident that you can deal with the caffeine well, note that the foetus growing within you is not equipped to handle the impact of this stimulant.
  • The caffeine reaches the baby through the placenta and it has been found that it can cause multiple problems in the baby.
  • The metabolism of the foetus has not yet matured and is still at the nascent developmental stage, so it is naturally not equipped to metabolise the caffeine intake by the expectant mother.
  • It has been further noticed that caffeine alters and renders a considerable negative impact on the sleeping pattern of the foetus which is harmful for its well being.
  • Even the normal movements of the foetus inside the uterus is changed and affected when the caffeine intake is high especially during the later stage of the pregnancy.
  • The baby can be born with low birth weight and other birth defects, apart from enhancing the risk of a premature delivery. There is the risk of a possible miscarriage as well.

There are researches that indicate clearly that regular and high caffeine intake can delay your conception and lowers your chances of successful conception. So if you are planning a baby take immediate notice of your caffeine intake. High caffeine intake is directly proportional to infertility issues. There can be a host of other reproductive issues related to high caffeine intake.

You should also remember that caffeine is not just present in coffee; it is present in significant amounts in other popular food elements like chocolates, soda and tea. It is also an ingredient in some of the common over the counter pills that women consume in order to get relief from headaches. So it is always advisable to keep a good eye on what you are taking in. Your well being is directly related to the well being of the baby.

Indeed I always drank coffee and never thought that this could harm the baby. Is black coffee equally harmful as coffee with milk? What about tea, is it also harmful?
