Concerns about Weight Gain (Inadequate or Excess)

Healthy weight is one of the signs of a healthy pregnancy. Find more about the concerns related to excessive or inadequate weight gain during pregnancy.

Right weight gain during pregnancy is one of the indicators that the baby is growing the right way. Proper weight gain is very important in order to prevent health complications during pregnancy and delivery. Have a quick look at some of the common concerns of mothers related to weight gain during pregnancy.

I'm worried that I'm not gaining enough weight

Thanks to morning sickness, some women are too queasy to eat in the first trimester. They may not gain much weight and some even lose weight. Fortunately, the foetus' need for calories and nutrients is quite low at this stage. Low weight gain later in the pregnancy is not a good sign. In such cases, it is important that the mother gets optimum nutrition out of whatever she eats.

I am in my first trimester and not putting on any weight.

Luckily your baby's needs in the first trimester are not so great. In fact, morning sickness can even cause you to lose a little weight. But from the fourth month on, you need to ensure that you are eating well because your baby's growth is about to pick up at a fast pace. Ideally, you should put on one pound a week until the eighth month. However, avoid eating empty calories; you need healthy foods to fulfil your baby's nutritional requirements.

I have put on over 10 pounds in the 1st trimester. What should I do?

Unfortunately this weight will be difficult to lose even after delivery, because it is on you and not on your baby. However, the foetus still needs its nutritional requirements to be fulfilled. So do not cut down or try to lose weight now. You must eat regular, healthy meals from now on, because the weight you have already gained will not help your baby's growth at all.

What if my weight is significantly more than the normal range?

Any extra weight gain is due to fat or fluid retention caused by excess salt or spicy food. If you do happen to put on a few extra pounds, do not try dieting while you are pregnant since it could harm your baby. You could ask your doctor for guidance and eat only highly nutritious foods. Avoid junk food at all costs.

What are the first signs of trouble?

If you gain a lot more weight than you normally should, or you notice a sudden decline in your weight gain, or you do not put on any weight for two consecutive weeks, then it signals trouble, and you should contact your doctor immediately.

What complications can be caused due to inadequate weight gain?

Inadequate or very poor weight gain during pregnancy is linked to infant mortality. In some cases it may also cause preterm labour. If your weight gain is slow or inadequate, you need to include foods rich in calories in your diet after consulting your doctor but make sure that you avoid empty calories. Slowing down on your exercise routine after consulting your doctor can also help.

What complications can be caused due to excessive weight gain?

Excessive weight gain during pregnancy can make it difficult for mothers to get back into pre-pregnancy shape post delivery. It can also create difficulties during delivery. Excessive weight gain which is a result of overeating or faulty eating habits can cause health problems like haemorrhoids, high sugar or high blood pressure during pregnancy.

How maintain a healthy weight during pregnancy?

During pregnancy your weight will be closely monitored by your obstetrician. For maintaining a healthy weight is a must to focus on healthy eating. Eating junk, spicy and fast foods must be avoided at all costs. Exercising regularly after consulting your doctor is also a must in order to prevent excessive weight gain. Walking is the best exercise for pregnant women to prevent excessive weight gain as well as maintain good health during pregnancy.
Weight gain should be properly monitored during pregnancy. It is a must to consult a doctor and take right measures if weight related problems are experienced during pregnancy. Maintaining a healthy weight is very important for having a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.

During the first trimester I gained 5 pounds. From weeks 14-16 I have not gained any weight and sometimes think I am loosing weight. I eat all the time I feel hungry, maybe once every two and a half hours but no weight is gained. I think I eat a lot more than I did prepregnancy, more than the extra 300 calories you are supposed to consume. My husband has a very high metabolism and eats enormous portions and doesn't need to exercise to stay trim. Could it be the baby is just like him and needs a lot more food and burns through calories rapidly. I know the baby is very small so his nutritional needs are also small. So I am very confused.
