Let us start with what does prenatal care actually mean. Your healthcare provider is the one who guides you through your pregnancy. Prenatal care constitutes of the visits that you have with him or her at regular intervals. The earlier you commence your prenatal care, the better it is for your own body as well as for your baby.

Prenatal care ensures that you have a successful and smooth pregnancy. It is an essential part of childbirth. Pregnancy is a complicated process that comprises of a series of problems and conditions that come as a package of pregnancy. So prenatal care provides the opportunity to identify and treat them effectively. The visits start at regular intervals like monthly, fortnightly and weekly and then perhaps twice and thrice a week as you get closer to your delivery date.

Given below are certain tips for prenatal or pregnancy care:

Series of Tests -

You need to know what happens to you during your visits so that you can get the maximum benefit of prenatal care. During each visit your weight is measured and your blood pressure is monitored. Several tests are conducted on the urine to test the hormonal and other associated changes. Understand the purpose of each test so that you know the needful measures that you must undertake. Every test is a means to ensure that you and the health of the baby are in the best possible state.

Know the Pelvic Tests -

Your doctor might suggest a couple of pelvic tests to check that your organs related to pregnancy are free from certain medical conditions. This involves checking the shape and size of the uterus so as to develop a clear idea on what environment the baby is growing.

Blood Tests -

There can be a series of blood tests from time to time to obtain data on several aspects of your health. You get to know on what type of diet and nutritional supplements you are required to take depending on your condition. More so, as gestational diabetes is very common during pregnancy. Timely treatment during prenatal care will help you alleviate the probable problems that can occur during childbirth. Further, bloods tests are conducted to check anaemia which is also common during pregnancy.

Other Prenatal (Pregnancy) Care Tips

As a part of prenatal care, here are some other helpful tips:

Go for a Healthy Diet –

Note, pregnancy involves a series of changes on various facets within your body. Most importantly, you need to ensure that the life growing within you is healthy and fine. So make sure that you eat a healthy diet that suffices all your requirements as well as the nutritional requirements of the foetus. Apart from nutrition, you also need energy. At the prenatal stage, your diet should be a wholesome one with proper quantities of vegetables, green leafy vegetables, fruits, breads, lentils, dairy products along with fish and meat. You must follow the nutrition program suggested by your doctor.

Take Prenatal Vitamins –

This involves all the supplements as directed by your doctor. The vitamins and minerals are for you and your baby’s health. They are important as they can effectively allay the risk of certain birth defects that happen due to the very lack of it.

Make a Note of Weight Gain -

The amount of weight that you need to gain every month should be determined by your doctor. Make sure that you follow the directions as too much or too little of weight gain can be harmful for both of you.

Apart from all these tips, you must take care that you avert smoking, alcohol at all costs. Exercise is a part of prenatal care, but only after consulting your doctor.
