Morning Sickness during Pregnancy

Morning Sickness during Pregnancy

Morning sickness is experienced by every woman during pregnancy. Read about the common causes of morning sickness during pregnancy and how to prevent it.

Do all Women Experience Morning Sickness?

Almost 75% of pregnant woman have morning sickness at some time or the other during the 9 months of their pregnancy. However, there are a few lucky ones who do not experience morning sickness at all during pregnancy.

Will Morning Sickness Affect me Only in the Mornings?

"Morning Sickness" affects pregnant women mostly during the mornings. However, it can occur during any time of day or night. You will be surprised to know that some women get sick even after they go to bed at night. Hence you must be prepared and ready to cope with your sickness at any time, day or night.

What Causes Morning Sickness?

The exact cause of nausea or morning sickness in pregnant women still remains a mystery. However, research studies have indicated that physical changes happening in the body combined with hormonal changes makes a pregnant woman feel nauseated.

Causes of Morning Sickness during Pregnancy

Some of the probable known causes of morning sickness include:

  • Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG ) - Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG ) hormone which increases drastically during the initial stages of pregnancy. Women with higher levels of hCG like those carrying multiple babies experience greater nausea and vomiting.
  • Estrogen – Estrogen is another hormone which is suspected to contribute to morning sickness in pregnant women.
  • Smell - A strong odor or a fragrance is capable of triggering bouts of nausea in women during pregnancy. It could be anything like the flavor the food she may be consuming or fragrance of perfume which another person is wearing.
  • Gastrointestinal Issues - Women with weak digestive system are likely to experience severe nausea during pregnancy.

How Can my Symptoms of Morning Sickness be Alleviated?

To alleviate symptoms of nausea during the pregnancy you must:

Eat Small Meals - Eat small and frequent meals throughout the entire day to ensure that the stomach is never empty. However, there is no single category of food which can ease the symptoms of nausea in women. Snacks like crackers can be eaten especially the first thing in the morning and half an hour before retiring for bed. Crackers are known to alleviate the symptoms of nausea and make a pregnant woman feel better.

Foods to be Avoided - Avoid food with flavor or smell which triggers nausea. Some women who are extra sensitive to smell may find that almost everything can make them throw up easily. Such women must try to identify foods that appeals to them and make it a part of their daily intake.

Consume Bland Food - Instead of eating spicy food consume bland foods with light aroma. Avoid fatty foods which take much longer time to digest. Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated throughout the day. To replace nutrients lost by your body because of vomiting you can consider taking sports drinks which contain salts and glucose after consulting your doctor.

Take Adequate Rest - Nausea can drain you out physically. Hence you must allow yourselves time to rest adequately. Even if you happen to be working full time make sure to take ten minutes break every couple of hours to relax and recharge your body.

Follow Simple Home Remedies - There are many simple home remedies for dealing with nausea like powdered ginger which you can consider making use of. For making use of this remedy you must grate fresh ginger into hot water and make ginger tea. Readymade ginger candies are also available in health food stores which are useful for providing relief from nausea.

Nausea is something that most of the pregnant women have to bear with. Vomiting spells can be triggered by anything like a stuffy room, petrol smell or even a car ride in expectant moms. Hence it is important for pregnant women to keep a close watch to identify these nausea triggers and avoid them as far as possible.
