What is Prenatal Counseling?

Prenatal counseling is very helpful for expecting parents to resolve all the queries regarding childbirth and development of child. Read on to know in detail about prenatal counseling.

When a would-be mother waits for the arrival of her first baby, she has lots of questions and anxieties in mind. There are diverse feelings of joy and fear. Prenatal counseling helps the mother to identify her potencies and confidence so that she is prepared for the birth of her child mentally and physically as well. This boosts her up and she deals with the labour pain effectively and copes with the doctor well.

Prenatal counseling is extremely important and useful in first time pregnancy and should be taken even along with the childbirth classes.  However, this counseling also helps prepare for second and third child birth and it can be taken instead of the classes designed for childbirth. It has been observed that anxiety and fear during childbirth hampers and disrupts the smooth flow of labour.

Knowing about Genetics

With the help of prenatal counseling you can learn how traits and characteristics get transferred from parents to children. Genetics is the guide to inheritance. The counselor will help you learn about the possibilities of the diseases that your child can inherit and what can be done to prevent the same.

Knowing about Birth Defects

Birth defects are any physical change or health problem that is present in the child from the time of birth. Birth defects can be non effective and the child with act just like any other child. But at the same time it cannot be denied that it can be severe and cause several problems at the time of birth and may be throughout life too. There are various genetic and environmental causes of birth defects. Prenatal counseling may help mother to know about it and take remedial measures for preventing it in child.

Pregnancy Over the Age of 30

Most of the women wait till late to have children because of many reasons like late marriage, career problems, settlement and others. However, all of these women are aware that there can be problems at the time of pregnancy and childbirth. Here prenatal counseling helps them overcome the fear and anxiety and take care of themselves and their unborn child in a better way.

What Happens at Prenatal Counseling Session? 

If you are anxious about what happens in the prenatal counseling sessions, you should be aware of that. In fact, the counselor will ask you few questions about you, your partner, your family, health history of your family and birth defects. If you are not well aware, find out from relatives and other family members.

The counselor will help you understand the risks, benefits and limitations of the tests that are carried out during pregnancy. You can also ask questions and clear any and all doubts you have regarding childbirth and development of your child. The session can be from 20 – 60 minutes and will definitely help you positively.
