  • Allergies can aggravate the problem of dry cough. Pollution can make it difficult for you to breathe, resulting in cough.

  • Bronchospasm refers to over-activity of the bronhioles muscles that result from allergic reaction to insect bites and foods.
  • Rhinitis also results in coughing. Nasal congestions are common all through pregnancy at times. High levels of estrogen cause the mucous membranes lining the nose to swell. This increases flow of blood and the area swells. Productive cough becomes a common problem with production of more mucus. Swelling and irritation can cause dry cough.
As you cough continuous pressure on the bladder can reduce the urine holding time and may also result in urine leakage. Persistent coughing may also interfere with your sleep during pregnancy. Thus, it is important that you notify your doctor about the discomforts you experience, so that he can suggest you the right course of treatment.

Treatment for Dry Cough during Pregnancy

Before addressing the problem yourself, you must always alert your doctor first as self-medication can be risky during pregnancy. He shall first examine your condition and then suggest the appropriate medicines. Coughing, at times also result from acidity or heartburn. In such cases, it becomes more important to address the stomach issues that are aggravating the problem of dry cough.
Even if you are opting for home remedies, you must inform your doctor. Here are some of the home remedies that can be helpful:
  • Drink plenty of water. You may add few drops of lemon in warm water to soothe your throat. You can always discuss about the use of lemon and honey in water as a home remedy.
  • Garlic candies can be helpful to soothe dry coughs. However, make sure to notify your doctor about use of cough drops.
  • Coughing can get worse when you are sleeping, so keep your head elevated.
  • If you are allergic to irritants like perfumes, dust and cleansing agents, stay away from them.
Maintaining the basic standards of hygiene, drinking plenty of water, including foods rich in Vitamin C in your diet and eating a healthy can help you keep the problems of dry cough at bay during pregnancy.
Your tummy may simply move up and down when you are coughing and it might not cause any direct harm to your baby inside. You can support your lower abdomen with your hand, in case you feel your muscles are getting strained.
However, persistent dry cough can be highly irritating when not addressed on time. Make sure to keep communicating with your doctor about your health. You must also make him aware of the symptoms you experience after the treatment.
