Amoebic Dysentery during Pregnancy and Treatment

Are you suffering from a bad kind of diarrhoea along with nausea during pregnancy? Well, you might be suffering from amoebic dysentery in this case. Your immunity strength is particularly low during pregnancy. This is the time when you need to be extra careful about yourself. You must adhere to the basic hygiene standards and make sure to keep yourself clean.
The food and water you take must be clean and washed thoroughly. Amoebic dysentery generally results from unhygienic conditions and contaminated foods and water. You must get in touch with your doctor, if you have contracted this disease at any point of time during pregnancy.

Causes Behind Amoebic Dysentery in Pregnancy

Entamoeba histolytica, a kind of amoeba is known to cause this diarrhoea. The amoeba develops to create a cyst that remains protected by the digestive acid of your stomach. It burrows itself in the small intestine and creates ulcers. Although, the cyst leaves your body, but it can still grow outside and this is how you get infected by it.
Thus, it is very essential that you eat well cooked food and your drinking water should not be contaminated in any way. Since, you always have a chance of contracting the disease from those infected; you need to be extra careful. Pregnancy is the time when you would not want to compromise with your health. It is thus better to stay indoors and eat home cooked food mainly.

Symptoms You Should be Watchful of

Here is a list of symptoms that you should keep a watch on, when you suffer from dysentery in pregnancy:
  • Chills
  • Fever with high temperature
  • Loss of weight
  • Blood stained diarrhoea
In severe cases you may experience the following as well:
  • Jaundice
  • Weakness
  • Nausea
You must inform your doctor immediately when you experience these symptoms. You will surely not want the parasites to live in your bowel all through your pregnancy.

Who Are at Greater Risk?

If you are pregnant, you need to be extra careful of contracting dysentery in the following conditions:
  • If you live in crowded areas
  • Live in areas where the sewerage disposal is not adequate
  • The drinking water is not clean
  • If you practice oral or anal sex
  • In places where human faeces are used like fertilizers
  • If you have a weak immunity
  • If your area does not practice clean sanitary practices

Diagnosis:

If you exhibit the symptoms of amoebic dysentery or you are passing blood with stools, you need to look for medical advice. The doctor shall carry out necessary steps for diagnosis of your condition. Take a look at some of the diagnosis processes that are commonly followed in this case:
  • He may request you to bring stool samples for checking the parasites and bacteria.
  • He may suggest an ultrasound if he suspects liver abscess.
  • He may ask you to go for a blood test to check the antibodies.
  • He may also arrange a colonoscopy to look into the bowels.

Treatment for Amoebic Dysentry:

Generally Tinadazole or metronidazole is suggested to treat this dysentery. However, these medications are not suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is very important that you seek advice from your doctor about the treatment procedures in your case. He shall be the right person to diagnose you and offer medications in right doses.
To prevent conditions like amoebic dysentery during pregnancy, you must be extremely careful. You must take special care of your diet and eat food which is prepared and stored hygienically. Right care is extremely important to give birth to a healthy baby.
