Urinary Alkalisers

Urinary alkalisers help by reducing the discomfort and pain of urinary infection in pregnant women who are prone to urinary tract infection.Read on to know the safety and efficacy of Urinary alkalisers during pregnancy.

Urinary tract infection is commonly observed in pregnant women. Nowadays, many expectant moms are suffering from this infection. Women usually undergo hormonal imbalances during pregnancy. This results in urinary infection during pregnancy.
Urinary tract infection refers to an infection in the urethra bladder (also known as cystitis) uterus or kidneys (pyelonephritis). Urinary tract infections are broadly of two kinds; lower urinary tract infections and upper urinary tract infections.
If you find a painful urination, burning sensation on urination, lower back pain, increased urination at night with nausea, vomiting, chills and fever, then you might have developed lower UTI.

Alkalisers Needed in Urinary Infection During Pregnancy

No doubt, urinary tract infection in would-be moms needs medical intervention for diagnosis as well as treatment. As the most effective means of treatment, antibiotics and urinary alkalisers are suggested. These alkalisers should be used as per obstetrician’s prescription. Urinary alkalisers also cure and prevent kidney stones by reducing the amount of acid in the urine. As you might commonly know, alkalisers are agents that neutralise or counteract acid content.

How Urinary Alkalisers Help

It is important to mention that human urine is acidic because its pH level is between 4 and 8, where level 4 is considered to be acidic and level 8 is considered to be alkaline. Urinary alkalisers make your urine less acidic. Thus, when you pass urine through your urinary tract or inflamed bladder during a urinary tract infection or cystitis, it does not cause much of burning sensation. Adding in alkalisers in every day routine helps in reducing the discomfort and pain of urinary infection.

Consult Physician Before Consuming

There are a range of urinary alkalisers available in the market. However, it is advisable to consult the physician before you take any such alkaliser. You might be allergic to sodium citrate, potassium citrate or citric acid, which are commonly found in urinary alkalisers.
However, even after taking urinary alkalisers, your condition does not improve or gets worsened in 48 hours, a pregnant lady should immediately consult an obstetrician. If you suffer from fever, nausea, vomiting, excruciating pain or bloody urine after taking in urinary alkaliser, you should promptly visit your health care practitioner.

A Common Urinary Alkaliser

It is being commonly recommended to use bi-carb powder as a urinary alkaliser. However, pregnant women should always seek advice of an obstetrician before taking any kind of alkaliser to prevent risks during pregnancy.
A range of alkalisers come in exorbitant price tags. Hence, it often stays beyond reach of common man. As a possible solution, you can bank upon bicarb, or baking soda, that works same as the commercial urinary alkalisers. Also, this is a cheap alternative that is efficient in reducing acidic content of your urine, though it does not taste good. Hence, before buying this readily available urinary alkaliser, it is wise to seek an obstetrician’s advice.
While you take urinary alkalisers, you might be recommended by your doctor not to consume caffeine products like coffee, coke, energy drinks, etc., as they are counter effective and increase the acidic content.

Composition

Many commercial urinary alkalisers contain citric acid to make the sodium bicarbonate (base) taste better. Also, such alkalisers contain tartaric acid, saccharin sodiumand sodium citrate anhydrous. Citric acid also dissolves sodium citrate better; thereby enhancing the product’s alkalising abilities.

Readily Available in Market

Urinary alkalisers are available in medical stores, online stores, supermarkets, etc. Usually, they come in a variety of flavours and colours. However, be careful before putting them into your body. Consult the health care expert whether the artificial colours, flavours, sweeteners and preservatives can pose any harm to your foetus and you. Make sure, they do not damage your immune system and your baby.
Do remember, urinary alkalisers may not solve your problem. Instead, these can make your problem less painful during pregnancy.
