Analgesics and antipyretic (Non-narcotic)

Aspirin

These drugs are mainly used to relieve mild to moderate pain. Some of these compounds like aspirin have mild anti-inflammatory action while paracetamol exhibits marked anti-pyretic activity. The analgesic/anti-inflammatory action is mainly by inhibiting biosynthesis of protaglandins. Anti-pyretic activity is considered to involve the hypothalamus.

Animal studies have shown that aspirin can cause birth defects in numerous species. There is no conclusive evidence that aspirin causes malformations in humans. When taken at term, they prolong labour. There is evidence that this also applies to humans. Intake of aspirin increases the bleeding tendency both in the newborn child and in the mother. Therefore products containing aspirin should be avoided late in pregnancy.

Paracetamol (Crocin, Calpol)

These drugs have been taken by a large number of pregnant women and women of childbearing age without an increase in the frequency of malformations or other direct or indirect harmful effects on the fetus been observed. Therefore, paracetamol is safe to take in pregnancy.
