Complexion Changes

It is not just that you get a rosy glow on your skin when you are pregnant. There are many skin problems that might arise during your pregnancy period which you will have to deal with. Read on to learn more about the problems and how to deal with them too.


Is it a breakout or a glow? Either ways, an increased secretion of oils brought about by hormonal changes is responsible for causing complexion changes during pregnancy in your skin.

It is true that a number of changes are seen in a woman’s body when she is pregnant. Although some are discomforting and annoying as well, some changes can be actually beneficial for the woman. The usual skin of a pregnant woman tends to glow and the complexion becomes clear and bright. However, these changes do not occur in early pregnancy.

Many pregnant women have to deal with plenty of other skin problems like blotches, rashes, acne, hair growth in unusual areas, brittle or splitting nails and worsening of existing skin problems. The main reason is that when a woman gets pregnant, a large amount of growth factor with higher amount of blood flowing through it is what happens. The rosy glow can be the initial stage of this higher amount of blood flow, but in reality these result in various other problems also.


Darkening of Skin during Pregnancy


You could suffer from many strange skin symptoms due to pregnancy. Some women are known to develop a dark line down the centre of the abdomen and the skin of a dark woman sometimes gets discoloured in the course of these nine months. Fortunately, most of these complexion changes return to normal after pregnancy.

Some women find that they have developed a darker skin tone on their face. Some also find that blotchy areas of darkened skin on their face. It has been observed that women with darker skin tone face this problem more than those having originally fair complexion. Also, if this runs in your family, you are more likely to develop it during your pregnancy period.

Splotches are generally seen on upper lips, nose, forehead, cheekbones or along the jaw line. Most often it looks like a mask. You may also get dark patches on your skin that is exposed to sunlight.

The skin parts that are already dark like freckles, nipples, scars and also the skin of your genitals get darker when you are pregnant. Your underarms and inner thighs also get affected.


How to Take Care of Your Skin During Pregnancy


Due to major changes in hormones, your skin gets affected during pregnancy. By making some changes in your lifestyle and your daily skincare routine, you can take good care of your skin during pregnancy also. However, regular use of moisturizer and sunscreen will prevent skin spots and stretch marks to a great extent.

Watch Out for Skin Changes

Pay attention to any change occurring on your skin and look after it immediately. If you act quickly, you will be able to correct the problem and also prevent it from getting unmanaged.

Avoid Oral Prescription of Acne Medicines

Avoid medication for your acne problem because it might affect your child oddly. Instead of taking pills, pay attention to your diet and apply topical creams and lotions that would help you get rid of acne.

Check the Ingredients of Your Cosmetics

Some of the cosmetic products have ingredients that might be harmful for your baby. Consult a dermatologist or talk to your obstetrician before using any cosmetic product or going for chemical peels or full body skin care treatments.

Reduce Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are almost sure to occur in different parts of your body along with abdomen during pregnancy. Moisturizing your skin will help you prevent occurrence of stretch marks.

Use Sunscreen Daily

Make it a habit of using sunscreen whether you go out in sun or not. This will save you from having uneven skin tone or wrinkles.

Minimize Usage of Hair Removing Cream

Use of hair removing cream and bleach should be minimized so that it does not negatively affect your unborn child.

In most cases, women get their original skin back after childbirth even if there is lot of changes in skin during pregnancy. Because of this, many women safely and easily address these problems when they are carrying the baby. If there is any sudden change or discomfort felt that alarms you, consult your doctor or dermatologist immediately.


How Diet Affects Skin During Pregnancy?

Remember that a good diet not only provides nutrition for your baby, but will also help your skin. Drink the most efficient pore purifier: water. Avoid make-up and creams and wash your face 2 or 3 times a day with water and a gentle cleanser. If your skin feels dry and itchy, use a moisturizer. Ask your doctor to prescribe a vitamin B supplement.

Folic acid deficiency is one of the main causes of excessive pigmentation. So make sure you are having your vitamin supplements regularly and eating greens, fruits and vegetables. Keep out of the sun, or apply a sun screen.
