It is quite possible that you give much importance to your gracefulness and you might not like to do anything clumsily. However, clumsiness is one of the most common complaints of pregnant women. Some feel annoyed and get irritated due to this ungainly attitude. If you feel so, you need to understand few things and be assured that you will get back to your graceful self once your child is born. It is a temporary phase and is completely unintentional.

Is Clumsiness Common During Pregnancy?

Yes, it is certainly common during pregnancy. Water retention combined with a loosening of the joints can make your grasp less sure than before. Concentration is also at its lowest ebb at this time. There is nothing that you can do about it. Just wait it out. And of course stay away from that beautiful Persian vase.

What Causes Clumsiness during Pregnancy?

Clumsiness is quite normal especially in last trimester of pregnancy and there are number of factors to describe it.

Weight Gain

You are carrying much more weight than normal. Some women gain a lot of weight at the time of their pregnancy which is above normal range sometimes.

Pregnancy Brain

Change in the Center of Gravity

Since you are gaining weight and the size of your belly is increasing, your center of gravity is continuously changing which results in lack of balancing capability in you. This can be one of the reasons of clumsiness during your pregnancy.

Hormones

The hormones that are released at the time of pregnancy, relaxes all joints of your body. Since the joints of toes and fingers also get relaxed due to the hormones, you might find the dexterity or balance that you had is missing.

Numbness

During pregnancy you might also find numbness or weakness in your hands and arms which might affect your efficiency.

Precautions for Clumsiness during Pregnancy

Although there is no remedy as such for this problem, you can save yourself from any serious situation if you take certain precautions. In fact, caution is the word that you need to keep in front of your mind no matter what you do during pregnancy.

Walk Slowly

Wear comfortable shoes and make sure they have grip in their soles and they are designed anti-slippery. Make sure you walk slowly even while performing your daily activities. For example if you are walking to the shower or getting into the bathtub, make sure you take all the precautions so that you do not fall.

Watch Out for Wet or Uneven Surfaces

This is the caution that you need to take especially when you go out. It is advisable to take someone with you when you go for shopping. Keep the floor and staircases in your house free of water. Also, get the objects that can make you triple or fall removed from the way.

Avoid Situations with Risk of Falling

If you have gone for an outing in the evening, stay away from the dance floors and hold the rail while climbing or coming down on stairs. Exercises and sports that have a risk of falling are not recommended for pregnant women.

Avoid Lot of Moving

It is advised to avoid lot of travelling when you are pregnant. Also, avoiding crowded places will also help you stay safe and protected.

When Should I Call the Doctor?

Most of the time clumsiness is not going to cause you any harm especially when you take necessary precautions. You should be alarmed or call your doctor only if clumsiness comes with headaches, blurred vision, lightheadedness, sudden swelling or pain. Sometimes infection also causes clumsiness which your doctor will take care of.
You need not worry because this is a completely temporary phase and you will get back your dexterity after the birth of your child.
