Delivery of Multiple Births

Delivery of Multiple Births

Delivery of multiple births is usually associated with preterm labour. Learn of the ways to reduce the risks of preterm labour and preparing for multiple births.

While the concept of multiple births may appear wonderful, there are plenty of risk factors associated with it. So, you along with your doctor shall take all the precautionary measures from the time multiple pregnancy has been conformed to enjoy a healthy and safe pregnancy. You must be aware of the signs associated with preterm labour. Do not miss any of the visits scheduled with your doctor. He or she shall assess all signs of preterm labour and ascertain condition of your babies as well.

What Happens in Multiple Births?

Nowadays, twin deliveries have become safer and more successful because of the benefits of ultrasound and foetal monitors. This shows the exact position and condition of the second baby too. If it is a vaginal delivery, the second one normally arrives after a gap of 8 - 10 minutes. But it does not always follow through, in which case, the baby would need to be extracted.

When is a Caesarean Recommended?

If there are three or more babies, the doctor would most probably recommend a caesarean section. It is not only easier on the mother, but it is also safer for the babies (since babies are most likely going to be premature and small).

Preterm Labour and the Risks Associated

To predict preterm labour, doctors perform foetal fibronectin testing. FFN or Foetal fibronectin is a kind of protein found in the fluid and membranes of the amniotic sac. If the protein is detected in the vagina or cervix within 24-34 weeks of gestation, the doctor takes it as a signal for an impending labour. Your doctor shall perform the test in your 3rd trimester to look for the risks associated with pregnancy.

Assessments of Your Unborn Babies

There will be frequent tests performed in the final trimester to help you keep a tab on your babies. Foetal surveillance performed along with ultrasounds shall help monitoring their heart rates. The tests shall help determining overall health of your babies.
You too can participate to assess you babies with a non-stress test. This test is usually performed in the 30th week of pregnancy. Heart rates of your babies are recorded in course of the test. Since, it is so evident from the name of the test; you need not stress yourself over the results. While the transducers monitor their heart rates, you shall be asked about your experience of their movement. This shall provide a complete assessment of the health and development of your little ones inside.
In case any of your baby scores low, it shall be taken care of immediately by your doctor.

Facts about Multiple Births

Though efforts are undertaken to reduce the risks of preterm labour, you need not worry, as all multiples are not always born before full term. Twin pregnancies can last for 36 weeks and you can expect the babies to be completely healthy.
Medical evidences show that post mature pregnancies can be highly risky for the mother as well as the babies. Strain on your organs and discomforts associated with late term pregnancy may prompt doctors to intervene labour. While some doctor maintain 38weeks of pregnancy should be considered a full term, others suggest a 40 weeks pregnancy should be considered a normal milestone. This holds particularly true when you are preparing for multiple births.

Different Possibilities for Multiple Births

The possibilities in these cases can be a mixed delivery, a planned C-section, an unplanned C-section, or a vaginal delivery. In some cases when a baby has been born vaginally, the next one is removed with a C section to reduce the chances of placenta abruption. You must completely rely on your doctor, who shall suggest you the right procedures.
It is not possible to predict an exact date for the arrival of your babies. However, as mentioned earlier, condition of your babies shall be monitored every now and then in the final trimester. When you near the term, your body may herself go into labour. If necessary, your healthcare provider shall intervene to induce labour, considering your health and that of your babies. Make sure you are at the same page with your doctor and develop the best course of action for a healthy outcome.

Delivery of multiple births is really very stressful as the whole process is repeated not once but for multiple times. Normal delivery is not safe in such cases.
