Making Room for Baby

Making Room for Baby

Here's how you can make the most of the limited space you may have, and yet provide all the furniture your baby needs.

As tiny as your baby may be, you are definitely going to have to make a whole lot of room for her - and if you live in a small apartment, trying to fit in all of baby's things may not be easy. For couples that live in a joint family and have only one room for themselves, accommodating baby's things and all of their things in that one bedroom may be even more difficult. Here's how you can make the most of the limited space you may have, and provide for your baby.

You don't need a crib

One of the first things many mothers want to do when they learn they are pregnant, is to start looking and shopping for cribs for the baby. Couples often want to pick up a crib even if they know that doing so will crowd up their bedroom. Although this sentiment is completely understandable, it helps to know that your baby does not need her own bed, and even after buying a crib parents often find that they put their baby to sleep on their bed on most nights.
Mothers often find it more convenient to have baby besides them, especially in the first few nights when they are breastfeeding the baby and find it difficult to keep getting out of bed every time the baby cries. In addition, other mothers have the fear that they may drop the baby when carrying her from the crib to the bed in a half-asleep state. So if you really do not have the room for a crib, do not force yourself into buying one, believing it to be a necessity. It is not! Instead, opt for a baby mattress wrap that comes shaped with side bolsters and pillow. Simply place this on any bed, and place your baby on it.

Bassinets occupy minimal space

If mosquitoes often find their way into your home and you do not have a mosquito net on your bed, you may want added protection for your baby. Or, you may not feel comfortable having the baby in your bed as you fear you may roll over her. On the other hand, you may simply have a strong desire to see your baby in a pretty little bed of her own. In this case, consider purchasing a bassinet. These little baskets often come equipped with a mosquito net, or you could purchase one separately and drape it over the bassinet. Consider going in for one with a stand that allows you to rock your baby to sleep. Bassinets require very little space and have the added advantage of being portable. You can cart your baby along with you with ease wherever you go - be it to her doctor's clinic or to the parlour.

Drawer beds provide long-term usage

Put a mattress in a large drawer that pulls out from under your bed. When your child outgrows the bassinet, you can use this as a pullout bed and when your child outgrows this bed a few years later, you can use it as a drawer for storage. Make sure that this place is safe for your baby.

Foldable furniture can come handy

If you cannot resist buying furniture for your little one, you can surely buy foldable furniture. Most of the baby furniture including cribs is available in foldable form. When not in use, you can easily fold such furniture and keep it aside.

Wall cabinets can be of great use

When a new member arrives in a family, you need to stock your house with a lot of baby stuff. You need a lot of clothes, diapers, baby mattresses, crib sheets, grooming products, towels, nappies, swaddling blankets and the list is unending. So, for stuffing all these things, wall cabinets can be of great use to you. These wall cabinets can help to save a lot of space and yet help you to store innumerable things in your house.
Making room for a baby is a joyful experience for parents. But when trying to adjust everything, baby’s safety issues should not be overlooked. Whatever changes you make and whatever you buy for your baby, do not forget to make sure that it meets all the safety standards.
