Is it Safe to do Waxing during Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is one of those moments in your life that you need to celebrate. However, you should also be ready for the body changes that you shall start experiencing now. Along with the downsides, you shall also enjoy the special glow in your skin. Among the not so positive changes are increase in body hair growth. The increased hair growth is due to the hormonal surges. So, it is important for you to know if waxing shall be safe for you now. Here we shall discuss about waxing during pregnancy so that you are well informed. But you also need to discuss it with your doctor to be on a safer side.

Reasons behind Hair Growth

Only those extremely lucky, experience reduction in body hair during this phase. However, most of the women experience increase in body hair mostly underarms and in the legs. Some of the other areas where growth of hair may increase are stomach, breasts, back and the upper lip.
The hormones as discussed earlier, specially the cortisol and androgens are responsible for increased hair growth in pregnancy. Increased hair growth shall also make you look darker and the hair shall grow thicker with time.

Sensitivity Issues and Risks

Waxing can be painful and thus you need to be more careful during pregnancy. Your skin becomes more sensitive as your heart pumps more blood to your skin. Irritation and pains thus before a common affair now. You can also opt for a patch test before going for a full body wax. This shall be one of the best ways to test for any allergic reactions. If you want to make the procedure less painful, you may also opt for a soothing lotion. However, make sure you have consulted with your doctor before opting for it.

Waxing though generally safe is not recommended in cases like high blood pressure, oedema, and gestational diabetes and so on. Oedema results in sensitivity and waxing can result in infections. High blood pressure can affect the blood vessels. Other complications like diabetes can result in difficulties when it comes to regulating temperatures. This increases the risk of burning that might happen from heat of the wax.

Safe Way to Get Rid of the Hair

While there are plenty of ways you can get rid of the body hair, you need to carefully choose the one that is safe and natural. If you are thinking of laser methods to remove hair, it is certainly not the right option in pregnancy and you should strictly avoid it. It shall act like an electric conductor in presence of amniotic fluid. The hair removal creams are also known to contain chemicals that may cause potential harm to the foetus developing inside.
Experts suggest natural methods like waxing and shaving are the safest possible options you can try while pregnant. Shaving may be cheap and painless, but it is certainly very tedious and difficult. You can on the other hand expect long lasting results with waxing and you will not have to take pains to remove your hair after every few days. The chances of your skin absorbing wax is also very little.
You are also exposed to almost no chemicals. However, you shall still be careful while using the commercial waxes, as they might contain some harmful chemicals. So you must thoroughly check the ingredients mentioned on the wax container. Also, to be on the safer side it is always better you discuss with your doctor about your plans of waxing.
The chances of infection are the only risk in case of women going through normal pregnancy. Your hair follicles get exposed with removal of hair that increases chances of germs to easily penetrate.
So, be informed and look for the best possible solution for you. For more information, make sure to talk with your doctor.
