Weight Gain and Baby's Development in Fifth Month

Facial features will rapidly start developing during the fifth month of pregnancy. Some mothers may also experience kicks during the fifth month. Find more about the growth and development of the foetus during the fifth month of pregnancy.

Most pregnant women are found to put on weight from around the fifth month of their pregnancy. You appear pregnant as your belly begins to swell up. As the usual morning sickness disappears by the fifth month, the mother feels energetic. So this should be the time when you can start with the low impact exercises in order to stay fit and healthy.

A Healthy Routine During Fifth Month

A prenatal yoga session is found to be very healthy for the mother as it helps her stay fit, avoid excessive weight gain and eases out the delivery procedure. A practice of swimming is found to be very beneficial during labour, if the mother already knows swimming and it is a good muscle and cardio workout. But one must take the advice of the doctor and a trained fitness expert before starting a workout plan.

Foetal Development in Fifth Month

During the fifth month, the foetus will begin to have hair growth on his head and will weigh around a pound. The mother too can feel the foetal movement quite clearly. This is the time when the facial features of the foetus are developing rapidly. The growth of the eyelashes and eyebrows has just begun. Along with the fingers and toes, the reproductive organs also develop by the fifth month of pregnancy.

Along with the other definitive features, the teeth also begin to form in the gums. As the tooth buds develop further, the thumb sucking action commences. This is perhaps one of the first motor functions that the foetus displays. In this stage, the development actually takes place with extraordinary speed. An array of internal organs begins to form and mature extremely fast. With the development of the muscles, the baby begins to move also. The mother will begin to feel the kicks and baby will also turn from one side to the other quite often. He might also choose to switch between the head up and head down positions very often.

Other Developments in Fifth Month

With the development of the hands and foot pads, the fingers and toes will begin to acquire shape. The unique fingerprint of the baby will also develop in the fifth month of pregnancy. He might wiggle his fingers at times and occasionally the foetus might let out tiny hiccups and also open his eyes for a very brief period. All these activities mark fast developmental stages of the foetus.

Understanding Ultrasound Photographs

A look at the ultrasound photographs will show you that the skin of the foetus appears reddish and wrinkled. With the commencement of the motor functions, the baby will also begin to manifest a routine and habit along with reactions. If there is a loud sound in the vicinity of the mother, she might feel an impact on the baby through some rapid movements inside her uterus. This marks the baby’s reaction to loud noises.

The foetus in the fifth month will also begin to have a regular cycle of staying awake and sleeping. The baby will be about nine inches in length by this period.
