Parents are often confused about how many years gap they should have between two babies. The gap parents wish to have between two kids entirely depends on their decision and they should understand that there is no ideal age gap between the babies. Both short and long age gaps between the kids have their own pros and cons. In this article you will get to know about importance of right age gap between kids by going through advantages and disadvantages of having different age gaps.

Why is Right Age Gap Between Kids Important?

Before planning to have the next baby, it is very important for mothers to recover from the previous pregnancy and child birth. Studies have revealed that when mothers conceive babies within 6 months of the previous pregnancy, certain risk factors are associated. The next child may be premature one and it may have low birth weight. If 12 to 18 months age difference is there between two children then mothers will get the required time to regain their energy and get the nutrients their bodies have lost during previous pregnancy.

Pros and Cons of Age Gap of One Year or Less

When the age gap between two kids is less than a year, the biggest advantage is that they will grow up together but again parents need to invest lots of time and energy in the initial months when age gap between the kids is short. It is quite possible that when the age gap between the children is short, the elder one starts taking up responsibility faster. Her or she love to dress up and fed on his or her own. The elder one may also take interest in the younger one and would like to have the younger one as the playmate. To have babies with short age gap may help mothers in their career. She can arrange for childcare easily as the children would be of almost similar age.
Parents can have tough time when they have kids with short age gaps. They will hardly have time for themselves. Parents especially moms would have more sleepless nights and will be busy in breastfeeding, diaper changing and other baby related activities.

Pros and Cons of Age Gap of 2 - 3 Years

When the age gap between two children is 2 to 3 years, parents can get a breathing time and they can enjoy the childhood years of both their children. By the time they have their second child; the first one will be over with breastfeeding and nappy days. The older one will already start going to the pre-school so moms would get more time to look after the younger one. But at the same time the younger one may have interrupted routine like his or her play, sleep or feeding time may get changed if moms have to accompany their elder ones to school, park or other places.

Pros and Cons of Age Gap of 5 Years or More

When the age gap between two kids is 5 years or more, parents can have more relaxing time. As a five year old child is quite independent, parents can give more time to the younger one. But again the disadvantage would be that, both children will have different developmental phases and will have different types of interest. Studies of the elder one get affected too as the younger one may start throwing tantrums when parents sit with the elder one helping in his or her assignment. As such there is no perfect age gap between two kids. Shorter and longer age gaps have their own advantages. It all depends on the comfort level of the parents and how much are they prepared for the next kid without having lots of physical, mental and financial strains.

I am 2 years older to my brother and we make best buddies. If the age gap is larger kids may find difficult to bond as siblings.

Women should give birth to kids before they cross 30 to avoid pregnancy complications so smaller the age gap it is better.
