Top 10 tips for initiating a healthy pregnancy

Here are 10 tips for preparing your body for healthy pregnancy.

Talk to Your Doctor about Medications

Check with your doctor that all medications you are taking are safe during pregnancy. A pregnancy should be as medication free as possible. Some medications can cause birth defects in foetus and some may even cause miscarriage. Therefore, it is a must to inform your doctor if you are taking any medicine while planning a baby.

Discuss About Illnesses

Discuss any family illnesses, especially diabetes, hypertension and TB with your doctor. These illnesses may also have an impact on your foetus as well as your health during pregnancy. If you are coping with such illnesses, you doctor may suggest appropriate measures to have a healthy pregnancy.

Undergo Tests

Take a test for German Measles (Rubella). On the basis of your family history and your medical history, your doctor may also advice you to undergo some more tests if required.

Avoid Smoking

Try to stop smoking (both you and your partner). Smoking is very harmful to foetus and can cause birth defects. So, it is important to quit smoking before you get pregnant. It is necessary to avoid second hand smoke as well during pregnancy.

Have a Healthy Diet

Eat a variety of foods with as much fresh food as possible. Include fresh fruits, green vegetables and foods that are rich in essential nutrients like folic acid, iron, calcium etc.

Take Folic Acid Supplements

Start taking folic acid supplements as per your doctor’s prescription. Taking folic acid supplements is very important to prevent birth defects of spinal cord like spina bifida as well as birth defects of brain.

Avoid Taking Alcohol

Limit your alcohol intake. Alcohol intake during pregnancy can cause harm to brain and spinal cord cells of the baby. Therefore, it is better to quit this habit while planning your pregnancy.

Make a Note of Harmful Foods

Certain foods are not safe to be consumed during pregnancy. As such you must make a note of such foods and avoid them while planning to get pregnant and during pregnancy. Avoid mould ripened soft cheeses, liver products, and raw or lightly cooked eggs

Exercise Regularly

Start exercising so that you tone your muscles. Practising yoga can also improve your chances of getting pregnant.

Avoid X-Rays

If you are going to have an X-ray, even a dental X-ray, mention to your doctor that you may be pregnant. X-rays emit harmful radiations which can affect the foetus.
Taking right precautions while planning a baby can help to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. If you are on birth control pills, stop taking them right away. Follow your doctor’s advice and have a complication free pregnancy.
