Bearing Labour Pains

Bearing Labour Pains

Fear of bearing labour pain is also known as Tokophobia. First time mothers usually undergo this type of fear. Read on to learn more about the common concerns of pregnant women about bearing labour pains and what are the ways to deal with it.
Fear of bearing labour pain is common in first time pregnant women. They also fear undergoing the process of labour. But there is no need to worry as bearing labour pain and undergoing the process of labour is completely a natural procedure. Let us take a look at the common concerns of women about labour pain.

I am frightened at the thought of labour

Labour pains are a major damper in the joy of having a baby. The thought of the pain that you have to go through makes you ill. Pictures of pregnant women, screaming in pain, that you have seen in hundreds of films, flash through your mind. You cannot get all those horror stories that you have heard out of your mind. This fear is very real, yet very normal.
Labour pains are a fact of life that cannot be avoided. There is no point dreading it and working yourself up. Take a childbirth education class and read up on the subject. Sometimes, the pain is easier to bear when you understand what is happening to your body. Prepare yourself physically and mentally by faithfully following a regimen of breathing and toning exercises. Remember that the pain is not going to last forever. With every successive contraction, you are that much closer to the end of the ordeal.

How to make labour less painful?

Here is how you can make your labour easy and less painful.

Exercise

Exercising everyday throughout your pregnancy period can help your body become flexible. Due to the improved flexibility of your body you may experience less pain and you may not have to bear the labour pain for long hours. Exercising regularly can help you to have a short and easy labour. Pelvic floor exercises are also very beneficial for encouraging quick and less painful delivery. Walking is the best exercise that can be practised during pregnancy to have normal and less painful delivery. You must consult your doctor before you start any kind of exercise programme. During pregnancy it is a must to exercise under an expert’s supervision.

Practise Relaxation Techniques

Labour can be managed easily by practising relaxation techniques. These relaxation techniques for dealing with labour pain must be learnt from a certified expert. Such techniques help to stay calm during the entire process of labour and undergo the process of delivery smoothly.

Practice Yoga

Practising yoga during the pregnancy period can also help to ease the labour pain during delivery. These yoga techniques must be learned from an expert. Regular yoga practise can also help to improve the flexibility of the body thereby easing the rigours of labour and delivery.

Perineal Massage

Doing Perineal massage right from the early pregnancy can help to make the vaginal muscles supple thereby easing the pain. This technique should be learnt from a certified therapist. Doing this kind of massage starting from the 12th week and through the pregnancy can help mothers to push their baby easily.

Other things to do during labour

Here few things that you can do when labour pain starts.
  • Munch on some healthy snacks but avoid overeating. Some light snacks are very good to keep your energy levels up throughout the labour.
  • Taking a walk can also help in easing the labour pain.
  • Having a warm shower can help you get relaxed and ease the pain.
  • Support of your spouse can also help a lot in easing the pain.
  • Deep breathing techniques learned from certified expert can help to sail through the process of labour and delivery easily.
During the process of labour and delivery, the support of spouse is very vital. To undergo the process of labour smoothly, you can have a discussion with your doctor in order to plan how you can manage the labour pain.

having had 3 very different labours - the best advice on getting through the contractions is deep breaths' and focus on what you will be getting at the end of it - not on the pain.

i had taken an epidural injection for painless delivery 5 years back (2000). i couldnt feel the labour pain only the contractions so delivery was normal and easy. my child was also born healthy. i havent faced any problems after that, i have no backache which generally is a misconception attached to epidural and i am back to my original slim form and fit as a feedle. i am planning to go for a second baby and will definitely go for an epidural again.

i think if you take epidural during labor, you don't feel much of pain. it is widely used in many countries , like us , canada, europe.it is pretty safe. in india some hospitals also use that.
