5 Things All Moms Should Do After Having a Baby

Right postpartum care is essential for helping new mothers recover faster from the rigours of childbirth and delivery. Here are top 5 things which all new moms should do after having a baby.
New mothers are mostly concerned about nursing and caring for their babies, in turn forgetting to care for themselves. Modern moms insist that they take all responsibilities of their baby right after birth.
Earlier there used to be nurses or ayahs to take care of the babies while the mother rested and recuperated to gain the energy lost in giving birth. The mothers should take care of themselves; else it will be harmful for them in the long run. There are things every mother should do after giving birth. Some of them are listed below.

1. Rest

Rest should be a new mother’s primary concern. Giving birth is taxing both emotionally and physically. It is essential that the mother rest as much as possible to regain back her health and reach a more calm state. New mothers need their energy to nurse their babies, so if they are weak they will be unable to care for their kids.
Yes, after giving birth the mother is hurled into a tide of activities, attending relatives and friends, yet they should try and get as much rest as possible. Forget about your spouse’s meals or looking after the household or attending to guests. No doubt most women prefer to stay with their mother after childbirth so that they have less burden and more rest.

2. Dealing with Bodily Changes

Your doctor will tell you about the changes that have happened in your body after birth. He or she will ask you to follow certain rules and regulations after birth. Make sure you follow them without fail. It is normal to experience constipation after birth, so you must drink loads of water. Restrict your activities. Make sure to visit your doctor as much as possible in case of any discomfort. Keep their number on your speed dial. Let your body recover for a year or two at least before planning another pregnancy.

3. Following a Good Diet

All doctors suggest a diet for your postpartum period. It is for you and your baby’s benefit as you are nursing. You must maintain a healthy diet. Whenever you feel hungry you should eat because your body needs the nutrition and fats. Never skip food. Your diet should be full of all kinds of essential nutrients like vitamins, calcium, iron and minerals. Eat lots of grains or cereals, vegetables, fruits and protein rich products like fish and meat. Also include lots of fat in your diet like ghee and butter.

4. Dealing with Increased Weight

Pregnancy can leave your body in a bad shape. After delivery your weight automatically reduces because you have delivered the baby. But you will still have some of the pregnancy fat on your body. Do not think that it will go away soon. But do not try to lose that weight immediately after childbirth either. You need that fat in your body if you are nursing.
You should try to lose a little weight each month and gradually after talking to your doctor in order to regain your shape. Being obese after childbirth is not recommended. Sign up for an exercise regimen directed for new moms. Slowly cut back on fat and sugar, avoid alcohol. Keep healthy for your baby’s health.

5. Depression

You might feel a little depressed after childbirth, but it is normal as your body is having hormonal changes. Try to be patient. Don’t feel too overwhelmed. The depression will soon go away. Try some yoga.
New moms should inculcate healthy practices in their lives. Just because you are not pregnant anymore does not mean you can go back to your old ways. Remember your baby’s health depends on you as you are feeding him or her what you are eating.

How should new mothers take care of themselves post delivery? What should new mothers avoid doing after having a baby? How can new mothers get back to shape post delivery? Discuss here.
