The Hormonal Ring

There are many contraceptive options available for women to choose from in the market. Vaginal ring is one such option and this is ideal for women who experience side effects from oral contraceptive pills. Read on to know more about vaginal rings.

The vaginal ring is a female contraceptive option that works on both the progestin and estrogen hormones in the female body. It requires a medical prescription and the ring is also recommended by doctors for the treatment of certain gynecological conditions like irregular periods, cramps occurring during menstruation and endometriosis. It is the health care provider who is the best position to decide which the perfect one for an individual is.

How Does the Hormonal Ring Work?

The hormonal ring is known as the Nuva ring also. It is a short object that measures 2 inches in diameter and is as flexible as a rubber band. The woman has to insert the ring inside her vagina just like a tampon. She needs to adjust it in proper place and in a single usage; the ring can be kept inside the vaginal cavity for about three weeks.

The ring holds the two female hormones. After the insertion occurs, the walls of the vagina absorb the hormonal medicine and begin to run through the entire blood stream. This results in the conditioning of the ovaries whereby they stop the production of eggs. The hormones also render a positive impact on the lining of the woman’s uterus and the mucus that is naturally present in the cervix.

The Benefits of the Hormonal Ring

Have a quick look at the benefits of hormonal ring.

Highly Effective - The vaginal ring is considered to be highly effective. It can prevent unwanted pregnancies by 99%. Its effectiveness is directly proportional to the appropriateness of its usage which is pretty much the case with most of the female contraceptive methods.

Effective in Young Age - The ring is effective for many young women who have just experienced the onset of their menstrual cycle and are beginning to lead an active sex life.

It Helps to Prevent Sexually Transmitted Disease - When the ring is used alongside with condoms, even the sexually transmitted diseases are completely prevented. Here it is important to use the condom for a week to obtain optimum results.

How is the Hormonal Ring Inserted?

Find out how the hormonal ring is inserted.

  • It is important to maintain good hygiene before inserting the ring. The hands must be clean and dry.
  • The ring is packed inside a foil pouch. After taking it out, the pouch should be kept to later throw away the ring after use.
  • It is important to feel relaxed while inserting the ring. So it is advisable to do it in the comfort of the bedroom or washroom.
  • The position you take is according to your preference and it is basically similar to the manner in which a tampon is inserted. The woman can choose to lie in the bad bending her knees, or bend her knees and squat on the floor. She can also insert it while standing with one leg up on a chair.
  • While inserting, the ring should be held between the thumb and the index finger. The sides of the ring must be held together so that they touch each other.
  • The ring should now be gently inserted into the vagina to the maximum distance that it can readily go. This insertion can also be done with the help of an applicator.

Some Facts to Remember

The ring is supposed to be kept inside the vagina for three weeks. Before the insertion of a new ring, it is important that the woman waits for at least a week.

Generally the vaginal ring does not fall out if the insertion is proper. The vaginal muscles can hold the ring in place quite effectively. However, if the insertion is not very penetrating, or the woman suffers from acute constipation or a strained bowel movement there are chances that the ring might fall out.

If the ring accidentally falls out, it should be properly washed in cold water and inserted as soon as possible.

Since the ring carries hormonal medicines, it is important to throw away the ring properly. Remember it is not flushable and it must be thrown into a bin in a sealed pouch.

I have never used a hormonal ring before but would like to try it. Procedure of insertion of hormonal ring has been explained here but still I have some doubts. If it is not inserted properly then also will it be effective? How do I know if I have inserted it correctly?
