5 Infant Non - Issues

Some developmental problems observed in newborn babies are normal and parents need not worry about such issues. Find 5 common infant non issues right here.

Common things to expect when you have a newborn at home are soiled diapers, sleep deprivation, a cranky infant and looking after the baby almost round the clock. In addition to these there are a few more non issues which are not really a cause of concern. However, these non issues can make the parents anxious. Here in this article you will find information on 5 non issues which are absolutely normal and something to be expected when you have a newborn baby.

1) Odd Shape of the Infant's Head and Other Body Parts

Picture perfect babies which most of us see in television commercials and magazine advertisements are rare. Most new born babies will be anything but round, rosy and cute. For example, many little babies have odd shaped heads. The baby's head may be conical or kind of square because of the time spent in the mother's pelvis just before birth. Some infants who slide out on the nose may have a squashed nose.
Eventually over a period of time these body parts will acquire their normal shape. Hence, parents must be patient and not be disheartened if the newborn baby does not look perfect at the time of birth.

2) Cold Hands and Feet

It is perfectly normal for tiny fingers and toes of an infant to feel chilly. This is because immediately after birth the blood is circulated more often to other vital organs where it is required the most. Hands and feet are the last body parts to get complete blood supply. Hence, you will often find new born babies having cold hands and feet with a warm torso.
Usually by the time an infant turns three month old her blood circulation would be normalised and adjusted to the external world outside the mother's womb. Thereafter, temperature would be the same in all body parts.

3) Blister on Lips

Newborns often get nursing tubercle or blister because of vigorous sucking from a feeding bottle or the breast. In certain cases blisters may be there at the time of birth itself due to thumb-sucking in the womb. These blisters do not cause any discomfort to the baby. It will disappear on its own within a few months time.

4) Strange Breathing Pattern

Till the time that an infant is 6-7 weeks old you can expect her to have an irregular breathing pattern. The infant may frequently take small pauses and then switch over to breathing rapidly. This is perfectly normal. The only thing to bear in mind is that the infant must always be put to sleep on her back. Soft toys and bedding must never be placed on an infant's crib. Medical assistance must be immediately sought when a newborn baby does not breathe for over 20 seconds or in case she turns limp or blue.

5) Flaky Skin

As soon as a baby is exposed to the outside world the uppermost layer of her will start drying and peeling off. At times the infant's entire body may peel although flaky skin is particularly noticeable in arms and legs. Parents should abstain from picking off the flakes. Immediately after birth the baby's skin may still be moist and not ready to be shed. Normally, by the end of the second week the flaky skin will shed on its own. Flaky skin is different from dry skin which requires to be moisturised.
Between lack of sleep, physical discomfort, and plummeting hormones these little concerns are bound to arise when you have a newborn baby at home. These issues normally get resolved by itself with passage of time. Hence, parents must be patient rather than getting worked up or becoming anxious. Needless to say in case of any doubt it is always better to consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis.
