Bonding Tips for New Fathers

Bonding Tips for New Fathers

Daddy-baby bonding is a natural process. However, just like expecting mothers start bonding with the babies right from their pregnancy period, even the expecting fathers can do so. Read on to find more about the importance of daddy-baby bonding and tips for new fathers for bonding their babies.

Until a few years ago the concept of daddy bonding with his newborn baby was unheard of. It was felt that there is actually no need for daddy-baby bonding in the initial stages of a child’s life. People thought that baby bonding was something that only involved the mother and her newborn child. However, baddy-baby bonding is equally important. Here is some information on baddy-baby bonding and bonding tips for new fathers.

Importance of Daddy-Baby Bonding

It is natural for a mother to feel very close and attached to her baby after carrying the child to term for nine months. Bonding comes naturally for mothers since they are the primary care givers.

Needless to say a mother-child bond is absolutely essential for well being and overall development of the baby. However, research has indicated that there is a need for a bond to develop between the father and child also. This is something which must happen from the very beginning. To ensure normal growth and development of the newborn child daddy-baby bonding is very important.

Daddy-baby bonding should start as soon as you realise that you are pregnant. When you carry your child in your womb you are able to physically experience the entire process. For example you can feel the baby growing inside you and recognise her kicks. However, your husband gets to meet the child only after the birth and may not feel really involved initially. Hence, you must involve him in the entire pregnancy and delivery process to ensure that he does not feel left out.

Daddy-Baby Bonding Before Birth

A research study has indicated that babies have the ability to distinguish between their parents and strangers voices from the time they are 30 weeks old in the womb. Male voices are lower in tone and are easier for babies recognise as compared to woman's voice which is high-pitched. The same study also pointed out that if dads to be speak to their baby prior to birth the newborn will recognise her father's voice immediately after birth.

Before birth singing is an effective tool for daddy-baby bonding. The idea here is not to make the child understand the words but to merely respond to the melody.

Another way in which dads can influence the emotional health of his unborn baby is by treating the mother well. By caring for the mother the new dad can nurture his unborn baby. The more contended, happy, and secure a woman feels the better it is for her and the baby growing in her womb.

Daddy-Baby Bonding After Birth

Immediately after birth of a baby the mother gets busy in nursing and other parenting tasks. Often new dads feel left out. One thing which will help keep the dad enthusiastic and foster the daddy-baby bonding is to let him handle many of the non-nursing things. For example, he can do the diaper changing, burping, baby massage, and even hold the baby for most of the time.

Massage is a very easy and effective way for the father to physically bond with the baby. While massaging the skin contact is the key aspect which helps in bonding.

In case you are a new dad I am sure you must have at some point of time felt that you are not the one in charge of deciding about your newborn care. Your wife, the child of your mother no doubt is the best person to look after all your baby’s needs selflessly. However, it is equally important for you to be involved in all decisions pertaining to your baby.

Significance of Bonding

It is essential for both parents to stay connected and communicate regularly. This does not mean that both of you must discuss each and every issue related to your child. As responsible parents you must be aware of what is happening to your baby. You should be able to voice your opinion wherever appropriate and approach the entire parenting process as a normal adult.

Daddy-baby bonding is something which happens naturally for majority of new dads. Hence, you must do your best to allow a healthy bond to develop on its own without forcing it in any way.
