Tips on Coping with Colic

A colicky baby cries incessantly for no reason. A colicky baby tests the patience of the parents as they find it difficult to handle her. Here we have given some tips on handling a colicky baby.

Handling a colicky baby is something that every parent has to do. In such situations, it is very important to be patient. Having knowledge of few things can also help to manage the situation tactfully. Take a look at the things that you can do while dealing with a colicky baby.

Consult a Paediatrician

If your baby has been crying incessantly for no apparent reason, check with the doctor to see whether she has colic.

Seek Professional Help for Yourself

The endless sound of a crying baby (even if it's your own) would try the patience of a saint. Remember that it is not unusual to harbour negative feelings towards your baby like anger, even hatred, when nothing you do can make the crying stop. However, if you are worried that these feelings are crazy, even violent impulses may get the better of you, seek professional help immediately.

Give Yourself Some Space

Take a break. Do not try to handle things alone. Ask your spouse, neighbour, friend, or relatives for help or get hired help. Take some time out for yourself every day. Go for a walk, have lunch with a friend, or pamper yourself with a massage. You do not have to feel guilty because this will just help you get your strength back to continue the battle against colic.

Put Your Baby Down for Sometime

If you have done everything you can to make your baby comfortable and she continues to cry, put her down in her cot for about 10 minutes and do something else so that the both of you can take a break.

Exercise Regularly

Exercise helps to work out frustration. Breathing exercises and yoga is very good to deal with stress and fatigue. Exercising regularly will not only help you to get rid of stress and frustration but also boost your stamina to carry-out day-to-day activities.

Involve Your Husband

Husbands must help. There is no way that they can be allowed to shirk their responsibilities in such a situation. The mother cannot be expected to cope alone. You can ask your husband to take care of the baby when you are doing other chores like cooking or cleaning. He can take care of the baby when you have to carry-out your fitness regimen.

Develop a Support System

Your parents or your in-laws can become your great support system. You can ask them to stay with you for some time. Your parents and in-laws too have a lot of experience in parenting and their suggestion can prove very helpful at times for dealing with a colicky baby. If it is difficult for your parents or in-laws to shift to your house, you can choose to live near them for the time being till the situation is under control.

Talk Your Worries Out

It helps to talk about it. So find a friendly shoulder and cry on it. It also helps to talk to other parents who have colicky babies so that you know you are not alone. By talking to other parents you may also come to know other helpful ways for dealing with a colicky baby. Talking to your friends or other fellow parents will surely help you to gather lot of strength for coping with a colicky baby.
If you have another child, remember not to neglect her. If she is old enough, try and make her understand that it is not her fault and that there is nothing seriously wrong with the baby. Make a little special time for her every day and make her feel that you love her.
