Taking Care of Baby's Eyes

Taking Care of Baby

Taking care of baby’s eyes is not a child’s play. Here are some tips for regular cleaning of the eyes of the baby and precautions for cleaning baby’s sore eyes.

The angelic eyes of your infant need proper attention and care. They are extremely delicate and you must ensure that all safety standards are maintained when you clean them. Make a note that as you take care of the baby’s eyes, it is not just about cleaning; it is proper and gentle cleaning. Here are some pointers on how to go about as you care for the baby’s eyes.

Vital Points in Terms of Cleanliness

Make sure that you are wearing clean clothes when you are handling the infant. The baby is very vulnerable to infections and you should not get close to the baby if you have been travelling as your clothes will have dust particles, even though they appear to be clean.

If you are sweaty, you need to change before getting ready to clean the eyes of the baby.

Make sure that you are not wearing any strong cosmetic creams or using deodorants and perfumes just before you clean the eyes of the baby.

Cleaning the Eyes

  • Ensure that your hands are cleansed with a clinical disinfectant before you proceed to clean the eyes of the little one.
  • Take some normal clean water in a properly washed bowl and soak a cotton pad in it. You can also use a soft cotton washcloth for this purpose.
  • Make sure that the water is a little warm that is comfortable for the baby. Squeeze the excess water from the wool or cloth.
  • Carefully cleanse the eyes of the baby with this damp cotton wool or cloth. Note that you should be very gentle and not apply much pressure.
  • Always remember that the eyes of the infant are very delicate.
  • With another set of damp cotton wool wipe the baby’s eyes from the inside to the outside. But make sure that the eyes were closed at that time.
  • You must use separate cotton wools or cloths for cleansing each eye. This will prevent any probable cross infection.
  • Some babies can be a little more fidgety than the others, while some are not very keen on getting their eyes cleansed. You need to be patient with them, follow the cleansing procedure gently and then move on.

Have a look at some points to make sure that you clean your baby’s eyes safely.

Precautions for Cleaning Sore Eyes of the Baby:

Here are some precautions which you must take while cleaning sore eyes of the baby.

  • If the infant has developed an eye infection, you need to be extra careful while cleaning them so that the infection is not aggravated and gets a good opportunity towards a cure.
  • Regular cleaning of the eyes will help the baby come out of the infection much faster.
  • Make sure that you are using a separate bowl and cotton wool or cloth for cleaning each eye. This will prevent the infection from travelling to the other eye.
  • You must also note that each cleaning procedure should have different cotton wools or cloths.
  • While cleaning the eyes inside-out, there should be one set of cotton wool, and another for cleaning the outside area.
  • Never try to clean the inside of the eyes. It is a wrong idea that this might help in reducing the infection.
  • Always clean the eyes when the eyes are closed. There is a potential risk of damaging the cornea while cleaning the eyes.
  • If there is a sticky discharge or pus from the eyes, you should be cleaning them more regularly.
  • Even if the baby is not too willing to get cleansed, you have to firm in gently removing pus with gentle care.
  • Use warm water that is comfortable on the skin for this purpose.

Thus you see that helping the baby use those tiny and divine peepers to view the magic of the world is in itself a big responsibility on you. Your love and care will help the baby deal with infections that are in abundance in the environment and thereby stay fit and healthy to enjoy the gift of vision.

This is normal as sometimes after a vaginal delivery, newborns are given antibiotic eye drops to clear any infection that may have been passed on to the baby as she traveled through the birth canal. clean your baby’s eyes, with a clean, soft washcloth or cotton ball soaked in warm water and gently dab around the baby’s eyes.

The eyes of my newborn appears to be red, puffy, and swollen, but she does not rub her eyes. Is this a matter of concern or is this normal?

To clean my baby's eyes, I use moistened cotton balls and wipe from the inside of the nose outwards. To avoid infection, I always use a fresh cotton ball for each eye. This I do during the bathtime
