Constipation

Parents find it very difficult to understand the bowel movements of babies. Every child is different. The diet of the baby determines stool patterns. A baby may be constipated. Here's a guide, read on.

My baby has not passed a stool in 4 days, is she constipated

Babies are so unpredictable. At one end of the scale you have babies who have a dozen bowel movements a day; on the other hand, there are some bottle-fed babies who go three or four days between movements. Many breastfed babies start having fewer bowel movements somewhere between one and three months of age. This is no cause for concern if the baby's movements are soft and cause no problems.

How can I tell if my baby is constipated

If the baby's infrequent stools are firmly formed or come out in hard pellets, or if they cause pain or bleeding (from a fissure or crack in the anus as a result of pushing), then your baby is constipated.

How should I treat constipation

A change in the formula or adding fruit juices (except citrus ones which are highly allergenic and very acidic) to the baby's diet should help. Giving laxatives, enemas or herbal tea should only be done after consulting the doctor.

my little daughter has the constipation problem all the days until she is properly potty trained. the problem was when she was in her diapers, she was standing when passing the stools, which made her difficult and started resist to it. when she was finally potty trained, she is now sitting comfortabely without the diapers and found it lot more easier to pass stools. one more important thing is to teach the child to pass stools regularly about the same time every day, after certain times, they will then develop into the habit of passing stools on daily basis. good luck

baby massage is very beneficial for constipation. using circular strokes on your baby's stomach and lower back after a warm bath can aid your childs constipation. also, adult toilets are not good for children. it is best to use a potty chair that is close to the floor because a child can not or should not have to push from an adult toilet where their legs will dangle. or you can use a stool that they can use to help push. when my son was an infant and constipated, i would help him squat while i held him with his diaper on. prunes or a little prune juice always helped as well.

i found out from my pediatric nurse that prune juice is really effective. i have a 6 month old who had not had bowel movement for 2 days. she got relief within an hour of drinking an ounce of diluted prune juice. it is available in the juice sections in any supermarket. prunes are dried plums and are good for grown ups also. peaches, plums and pear also help.
