10 Table Manners Every Kid Must Learn
Table manners are important skills for children and they are best when developed in young age. It is practically not very easy to make children follow table manners. Read on to learn about the 10 table manners every kid must learn and how to help them attain it.
When dealing with children or expecting things from them, parents should understand that kids do what they see. So, if you want your kids to learn and follow table manners, you need to set and follow the etiquettes everywhere and for everything that you do.

Basic Table Manners Every Kid Must Learn

Have a quick look at the top 10 table manners which you must inculcate in your child.

1. Washing Hands Before Meal

If you wash your hand before eating, your kids will follow suit. You can also explain why washing hands is good. Tell them that dirt and germs cling to fingers and nails and by washing them before meal we get rid of them.

2. Waiting for Everyone to Start

Children almost grab and start eating food immediately after sitting at the dining table. Teach them to be mannerly and start eating only when all start.

3. Sitting at the Table

Kids are always in a hurry to finish their meals. They do not like sitting in one place and eating as well. Teach them to sit at the table first and if possible, make them sit for 5 – 10 minutes before starting.

4. Burping While Eating

Children love to make sound and especially burp when eating. Make sure you or your spouse does not laugh at this. Set boundaries and teach your kids that burping on the dining table means bad manners.

5. Making Sound While Eating

Kids make sound while eating especially when they find the food of their choice. Teach your child to chew the food slowly without making any sound and let her observe you doing that. Make sure she does not talk while eating.

6. Say “Please” and “Excuse Me”

Teach your kids to say “please” and “excuse me” when they need to ask someone to pass the food or reach out to a specific bowl.

7. No Making Negative Comments on Food

You need to teach your kids not to make any bad comment on food even if they do not like it. This will make them stay mannerly even after they grow up or when invited for dinner somewhere else.

8. Never Take Cells Phones, Toys or Pets to the Table

Kids should be taught not to make use of their cell phones when on dinner table. This rule goes with the adults also. So, you also need to take care of this.

9. How to Use Spoon, Fork and Knife

Although Indian food does not always require you eating with fork and knife, you should teach your child how to use them. Make sure they know which hand is meant for holding fork or knife. Holding the spoon correctly and eating food without spilling is also important.

10. Wash Hands After Meal

Even if your child is eating with a spoon, she might at times use her fingers to assist putting food into her mouth. Explain, cleaning the hands properly after finishing the meal is very important.
Remember, table manners cannot be taught in one day. You need to have patience and make sure you remind them till they master the etiquettes. There are lots of things that children are learning while they are growing and they might forget one or the other at times. Do not expect that since you already told your kids the rules, they will follow them. Things are going to pop up randomly and you should be prepared to handle them coolly.

Which table manners should be taught to children? Why is it necessary to teach table manners to children? How to encourage children to follow table manners? Discuss here.

We must also teach them to pick-up the spilled food particles on the table and keep the plate in the sink after they finish eating.
