Lok Sabha Elections 2014 - Importance of Voting

Lok Sabha or General Elections will take place from April 7, 2014 to May 12, 2014 all over India.Read on to know why it is important to vote and find about the characteristics which you should look for in a candidate who deserves your vote.

Voting is a vital aspect of a democratic country. Voting is a responsibility that should be carried out all citizens of the country. It is through voting that citizens can showcase their problems and desires with respect to the country and themselves. It is through the decisions of the voters that government policies are changed or brought into being. Voting allows the common people of a democratic nation to inform their acceptance or displeasure of a government policy. In spite of being one of the fundamental rights of a citizen, many choose not to take part in electoral activities. This brings to the fore an important question.

Why Should Citizens Vote?

As mentioned before, every citizen is given the right to vote in a democratic nation. This fundamental right places the responsibility of choosing the leaders of the nation. Voting is more than a simple duty. It is a symbol of the fact that the people are a part of the affairs of the country. Although voting is not compulsory, it is an exercise which should be performed by all those who are capable. The outcome of an election decides the laws of the country.

Consequences of Not Voting

By not voting, people will lose the chance to decide the way their life will be governed. Government sanctions, restrictions and behaviour depend on the ruling party and this party is chosen by the voters. Abstaining from voting can significantly alter the odds of an election. If the number of voters are less then fewer is the number of votes necessary for a party to win the election. Since voters, decide the government, it is actually them who decide the fate of the country.

Choosing the Person to Vote For

There are seldom any black and white distinctions among the candidates contesting an election. A citizen should have an informed opinion on the candidates without any bias or prejudices. Each candidate has their own agendas which they would want to incorporate in the government. A voter needs to understand those agendas and figure out which one they prefer. One candidate might want to improve foreign trade while another might wish to focus on native industries. These are questions which rarely have one particular answer. It all boils down to the voters’ opinions. A voter has his or her own opinions on certain government matters. A voter who wants more free speech should vote for a candidate who desires the same thing.

Other Aspects for Choosing the Right Person

A closer look at the candidate’s personality and work ethics is also very important. This is because they will be entrusted with the duty of running the country. Before zeroing in on a candidate, the voter can and should gather information. Since most candidates are associated with political parties that have been around for quite some time, it is easier for voters to make a more informed choice. The history of the party and candidates should be taken into account. Talking with people, internet websites and newspapers are a great way to find out more about candidates. This will not only help in making an informed choice but also at the same time, the voter’s own outlook is developed.

The ability to vote means that the voter is in control of his life under the government as well as the country at large. Voters impact the way the country is viewed by other countries as they choose candidates who then choose the foreign policies of the country. The way people are governed, how much freedom the citizens have and various other things depend on the outcome of an election. This is the democratic way of government and the voters are the ones with power.

Why is it important to vote during elections? What aspects should not be overlooked while choosing a candidate to vote for? What are the consequences of not voting in an election? Discuss here.
