Making Costumes

Spend some time with your child, and enhance his creative instincts. Find interesting ideas for making costumes for your child right here.

Here are great, funky costumes that you can make with your kids. And which kid wouldn't enjoy colouring his clothes with a marker and other decorative materials! There's no limit but your imagination, so let it run wild!

Making a Pillow Ghost

You will need:
  • An old pillowcase
  • Permanent markers in various colours
  • A 'naada' or string
  • Colourful pieces of fabric
Method:
Take a pillowcase and cut a hole at the stitched end, so your child's head can go through it. Alternatively, let your child's head remain in the pillowcase - just draw two holes for the eyes. After removing the pillow from your child’s head cut holes for the eyes and cut holes in the corners as well, for arms. Take a permanent marker and make some interesting designs. Or, take other pieces of cloth and staple or stick them on to the costume.
Sew the bottom of the pillowcase so that you can run a cord through it. Pull the strings of the cord together, so it gives a gathered effect at the bottom.

Making Bunch of Grapes Costume

You will need:
  • Green or purple balloons
  • Full-sleeve shirt and full pants
  • Cello tape
  • Green Cap
Method:
Blow a lot of balloons and make your child wear full-sleeve top or shirt and full pants. Now stick the balloons with the help of the cello tape all over the clothes of your child. Use your creativity to stick the balloons in such a way that your child appears like a bunch of grapes. Make sure that you do not stick balloons on your child’s hands. Make your child wear a green cap. If cap is not available you can make a paper cap using green paper.

Making Butterfly Costume

You will need:
  • Black full-sleeve shirt and black pants (black shirt and pant with white polka dots would look great)
  • Cardboard paper
  • Water colours
  • Pair of scissors
  • Cutter
  • Black Ribbons
  • Paper
  • Straws
  • Glue
Method:
Draw wings of butterfly on the cardboard paper. The size of the drawing should suit your child age and height. Colour the butterfly with the colours of your choice and make black outlines on it. Cut the unwanted part of cardboard paper with scissors or a cutter to make the shape of butterfly. Now make holes in the centre part of the butterfly to tie the ribbons to it in such a way that you can tie them to your child’s arms. Make a paper cap, colour it with black colour and stick two straws to it for making it look like the antennae of butterfly
When you butterfly is ready ask your child to wear shirt and pant. Tie the butterfly on the back of your child with the help of the ribbons. Make your child to wear the cap as well.

Making Octopus Costume

You will need:
  • Skin-tight shorts
  • T-shirt matching shorts
  • 5 pairs of long stockings matching shorts and t-shirt
  • Sponge or some other material to fill the stockings
  • Needle and thread for stitching
Method:
Take 3 pairs of stockings and fill them properly with sponge or other material that you would like to fill it up with so that it looks like a proper leg. Stitch two of these stockings to the t-shirt in front, two at back near the waist-line and two on the sides. Now, ask your child to wear the t-shirt, shorts and wear a pair of stockings above shorts. Your child must wear the remaining pair of stockings in her hands. The stockings should cover your child’s hands up to the arms and legs up to the thighs. You child will appear like octopus having many legs.
The above mentioned are the perfect costumes for your child to wear at a fancy dress party, or a party with a spooky theme!
