Making Vegetable Stamps

Drawing, colouring and painting are the favourite activities of children. Make these activities more interesting by introducing vegetable stamps to your children. Here is how you can teach your children to make vegetable stamps.

Teaching children to make vegetable stamps is quite easy. Vegetable stamps can be made using any vegetable. So, what are you waiting for? Just grab the vegetables that are lying in your refrigerator and get started!

Can your child make vegetable stamps?

Come summer, come vacations. Children are relatively free during this holiday season. IndiaParenting now serialises fun-filled activities for children that can keep them engaged during holidays and after-school hours. Here is the first in the series. Teach your child to make vegetable stamps!
Ask your children to collect these items and supervise their use:
  • Any seasonal vegetable (ladyfinger, capsicum, potato, carrot, radish or baby corn)
  • Watercolour tubes
  • Knife
  • Sheets of paper
  • Small bowl
  • Paintbrush

Ladyfinger Stamp

Take a ladyfinger, wash and cut it into two halves. Squeeze some watercolour (any colour of your choice) from the tube in a bowl and add a few drops of water to dilute it. Mix the paint well with a paintbrush. Keep it little thick to get better results. Take a sheet of paper and fix it on a hard board. Dip the freshly cut face of one of the two halves of the ladyfinger into the paint. Once it is well coated your vegetable stamp is ready for use. Put its impression on the sheet of paper to get any pattern. Let your child's imagination run wild with new patterns.

Potato Stamp

Take a big potato. Cut it into two halves and draw (with a ball pen) any design (e.g. a star, triangle, an alphabet or your name) on the cut surface. Cut off the unused portions very carefully with the help of a knife to retain only the desired shape. The carved end of the potato will show a colourful pattern when you dip it in the paint and stamp it on a paper.

Lemon Stamp

Take two lemons of different sizes. Cut each one of them into halves. Dip lemons of different sizes in it in different paints and stamp it on a paper or a fabric. This colourful lemon stamps will look amazing.

Multiple Stamps

Not just ladyfinger or capsicum, but most vegetables can give rise to interesting patterns. Even a cauliflower or radish can play wonders.

Making Interesting Patterns with Vegetable Stamps

Let us take a look at different artworks that can be made with vegetable stamps.

Ladyfinger Flower Pot

As show in the picture, beautiful flowerpot design can be made using ladyfingers. After drawing a flower pot, flowers can be made with ladyfinger stamp and leaves can be drawn to create a wonderful flowerpot.

Celery Stalk Roses

As you can see in the picture, you can make beautiful artwork of roses using celery stalks. All you need is a celery stalk. You need to cut and take the thicker bottom part of the stalk as shown in the image below. Your child can take any colour of her choice to make rose prints on paper or fabric. If you want to make a beautiful artwork on fabric, you can use fabric paint.
You can allow your child to make vegetable stamps by using her creativity and imagination. Children can think in much creative ways than adults. So, let your child’s creativity flourish by making different vegetable stamps.
For interesting and exciting colour play, stamp different vegetables at different places on a paper. The collage can yield great results. To make the activity more colourful, use more than one colour. Compare paper impressions of different vegetables on a sheet of paper. The symmetry will leave your child amazed!
