Assisted Reproductive Techniques for Infertility Treatment

Have a quick look at the assisted reproductive techniques which are widely used for treating infertility problems.

IVF – In Vitro Fertilisation

IVF or In Vitro Fertilisation is an infertility treatment in which eggs and sperms of a couple are allowed to meet in the laboratory so that fertilisation of egg takes place externally. Fertilised eggs which become embryos are then transmitted in the uterus of woman. Women are given progesterone so that the lining of uterus is thickened and embryo gets implanted and conception takes place.

This procedure is carried out with the help of fertility drugs so that the chances of conception are increased. Sometimes eggs or sperms are also adopted depending on the kind of infertility problems faced by couples. At times womb renting or surrogacy is also chosen by many couples based on the infertility issues which they are facing.

IUI – Intrauterine Insemination

While carrying out IUI or Intrauterine Insemination, good quality sperms are selected and placed in the uterus when the ovulation takes place. This treatment is also carried out with the help of fertility drugs. This treatment is recommended when couples are facing problems like low sperm count, poor quality of sperms, premature ejaculation or when the couple is unable to have sex. This treatment is also chosen when the actual cause of infertility is not known. Just like IVF, carrying out this treatment may also require adopting eggs or sperms or surrogacy depending on the reason for the infertility in the couples.

On the contrary, recent studies have revealed that almost 10% of women find it difficult to either get pregnant or stay pregnant especially in developed countries. Depending on age and living conditions the figures are given. The data received from hospitals and healthcare centers say that 10 – 15% of women in childbearing age receive treatment for infertility every year.

2. Infertility is a Women Problem

This is one of the biggest myths related to infertility. Couples should be aware of the fact that causes of infertility are equally shared by male and female, both. However, sometimes there might be some other problem also.

3. Infertility Problems are More Psychological than Physical

The depression and frustration of not having a child can lead to psychological problems or worsen relationship of such couple, but the truth is that infertility is always due to some physical and internal problem. It certainly has a solution or explanation in medical science.

4. Age Has Nothing to do with Infertility

Age is no bar for getting pregnant because there is news of women in 40s and 50s getting pregnant. Well, the truth is that women get pregnant and are capable of giving birth to healthy child naturally before they cross the age of 42 – 43. Women who have become pregnant after this age have either used another woman’s egg or adopted an embryo for conception. Also, there are many health risks involved in these pregnancies.

5. Adopt a Child and You Will get Pregnant

Adoption is a good way to get rid of the feeling of childlessness but it is surely not a cure for infertility. Some women get pregnant after adoption of a child, but they may be because of the treatments going on or some external problems that were hampering conception like stress, depression and more.

6. Infertility Treatment Eases the Path of Second Child

In addition to above there are some couples who take infertility treatment during their first child and assume that it will be easy for them second time. Well, this is also not true always. There are certain conditions in men and women that need special care and medical attention during pregnancy. So, you should check this out with your doctor beforehand so that you do not get disappointed.

7. Infertility Treatments are Highly Expensive

Some couples believe that infertility treatments are very expensive and so they do not consult doctors or healthcare centers. Before having any kind of presumption it is advisable to consult your doctor and find out whether the treatment is really not affordable for you or it was simply your hesitation.
