Therapeutic Insemination by Donor (TID)

Therapeutic Insemination by Donor (TID)

Dealing with infertility issues are emotionally taxing. TID or Therapeutic Insemination by Donor is one of the best treatment options available in case of male infertility. TID procedure requires sperms from anonymous donor. This procedure has emotional repercussions for the couple undergoing treatment. Read on to more.
TID stands for Therapeutic Insemination by Donor. This procedure is akin to sperm donation in the sense that the process requires the use of sperms from an anonymous donor to make the woman pregnant. This comes across as a treatment option only when the man is infertile. Microinjection has evolved as a preferred cure to deal with male fertility issues and this has somewhat resulted in the decline of the TID. But since these new-age techniques are quite pricey, many still prefer the TID.

The Psychological Hurdle

Opting for TID is a big decision for any couple. There are a host of issues ranging from emotional, ethical to psychological that can cause serious problems for couples and their relationships. The child born out of the TID procedure is often apprehended as ‘another man’s child’ by the family and even the male partner or the father. The husband might feel unable to play the role of a father and end up feeling envious, vulnerable, secluded, inferior and even self-doubting.

On the part of the woman, she can feel bitter that she has to undergo a treatment that is emotionally taxing for another person’s ‘inability’. The idea of bearing the baby of a complete stranger and has to deal with the emotional upheavals all by herself as she cannot confide it even with her close relatives or friends.

This is the reason why couples who wish to undergo TID are first advised to sit for thorough psychological counseling. It is whole gamut of conflicting emotions that the wife and her husband undergo in these cases. There can be fantasies and nightmares experienced by both the parents on the anonymous donor. There are also concerns on whether the child born out of the TID pregnancy will be normal and a whole lot of apprehensions regarding his appearance, skin color, color and shape of the eyes and hair. It is even found that the father experiences temporary impotency during the treatment, believed to be caused by stress more than anything else.

Ways to Overcome these Crisis

Since all the problems fall under the emotional category, it is natural that the solution also lies in treating them through counseling and enhancement of mutual relations between the couple. At times a tactful gentleness and humor can go a long way to deal with the emotional apprehensions. The most important point in this regard is that both the husband and wife must be sensitive towards each other’s issues. All the apprehensions of the husband and the wife are needed to be dealt with complete honesty and maturity.

Hiding them or pretensions can only lead to the development of a compounded emotional turmoil that can lay hidden like a dormant volcano. It is not only the relationship between the partners and marriage that is important but it must be remembered that the future of the yet to be born child might fall into serious jeopardy. And as parents they are only people who will be accountable to whatever befalls him.

  • It needs to be ensured between the couples that they will both be required to be equal partners in the upcoming parenthood.
  • It is love, patience and understanding that alone can help both the partners to deal with the treatment. They must first be assured of their commitment to each other.
  • A gynecologist, fertility counselor and a family counselor are the best people whose help should be sought.
  • Every other available choice must be properly explored and TID must never be a rash decision.

What is the need for men to go in for TID when there are other options for infertile men. Male infertility can be treated. Even if cost factor is a issue, still I think couples will want to have their own biological child.

TID is a good option provided men accept it wholeheartedly. It is a big decision for a man as biologically the child will not be his own.
