Sperm Banking and Why are Sperms Kept Frozen?

Sperm Banking and Why are Sperms Kept Frozen?

Sperm banking is of great help for couples with infertility issues, but sometimes sperms of the husband is stored and frozen. Freezing and storing the sperm of the husband has its own advantages and moreover there are some disadvantages of using fresh semen. Read on to know more.

Sperm banking is primarily resorted to as a part of donor insemination. But there are other aspects to it that can prove to be useful. In certain cases the sperms of the husband is stored and frozen; which is later used for the treatment of the wife. Given below are the usual circumstances where it may be necessary:

Situational Erectile Dysfunction in Males -

Under this case of erectile dysfunction, the husband may not be able to produce a sperm sample through the process of masturbation. So when the wife is ready for the IUI or the IVF cycle, the frozen sperms comes handy. This is because at the required time the husband may not be able to provide a sperm sample. However it has also been observed that since the tension is off, the husband can be at a much relaxed state as he already has a frozen sperm sample. So at the required time, he is quite able to provide the sperm sample without any hassle.

Long Distance Relationship –

This is when the husband is into a career that requires him to travel extensively. That is, either he is working overseas or into navy or a very busy business traveler. Under these situations, the frozen sample can be used to treat the wife at a convenient situation.

Variable Sperm Count in Males –

When a man has such a characteristic, it makes sense if he is stores up the ‘good samples’ for future use. But it is important to take note of a point here. Even if a lot of frozen samples are pooled together, it does little to enhance the overall quality of the sperm.

Cancer in Males –

Cancers are known to affect the body and its various organs unsuspectingly and thereby pose danger for many organs. So the man would like to protect his reproductive potential by taking advantage of this opportunity to conserve his sperms. The frozen sperm can be used to inseminate the wife at a later date.

The semen sample obtained from the donor is always used in frozen form. The use of fresh semen sample for artificial insemination can prove to be dangerous for the woman. So samples are obtained from the sperm bank which has been cyro-preserved and tested. It is important to ensure that the number of motile sperms in the frozen samples is adequate.

Disadvantages of Using Fresh Semen

Here are some disadvantages of using fresh semen:

  • The records of the family and medical history of the donor may not be available.
  • A detailed study that matches the physical traits of the donor and the husband cannot be performed.
  • If the donor happens to be an acquaintance, there can be legal, emotional and egoistic turmoil in the relationship between the husband and the wife.
  • Since the regular tests will not be performed, the quality of the sample will remain suspect.
  • The period of treatment cycle is very delicate and a donor might not be available at the critical juncture.
  • Since fresh semen cannot be tested for HIV, the fear of AIDS is also there.

Using fresh semen absolves all these disadvantages as the required tests can be carried out. The treatment can happen on the desired time according to convenience and the quality of the sample is always assured.

The movie 'vicky donor' was great. It dealt with the issue of sperm donor. I think donating sperms is a noble deed. Many women are able to have children with the help of donated sperms in case their partners have fertility issues.

Sperm banking is like a boon for infertile males. Stringent quality checking should be done for donated sperms.
