The IVF Procedure

The IVF Procedure

IVF or In vitro fertilisation refers to the procedure wherein the egg cells are fertilised by sperms outside the body. It is one of the major treatment options for infertility in couples. The fertilised egg is then transferred into the uterus and allowed to complete the pregnancy term. Get your basics clear about IVF, read on.

In vitro fertilisation or IVF involves the process of stimulation of multiple follicles and eggs inside the ovaries. The eggs are then taken out of the womb of the woman and fertilised in the laboratory with the sperm of her partner which leads to the development of the embryo. They are then transferred back into her uterus. The first successful IVF baby was born as early as 1978 in England. This is a technique that allows a lot of mothers to give birth to healthy babies when they are faced with certain medical complications that do not enable to conceive naturally.

Who Should Receive IVF Treatment?

The candidates suffering from following disorders can receive IVF treatment.

Infertile Couple-

This is an effective treatment procedure for infertility cases. But if this infertility is due to some anatomic problem within the uterus like, severe intrauterine adhesions, the lady should not opt for IVF. If any couple fails to conceive even after one year, they can try this out.

Blocked Fallopian Tubes or Pelvic Adhesions-

If the woman has a distorted pelvic anatomy along with blocked fallopian tubes or pelvic adhesions, she has a good chance of trying out this procedure. Men who have undergone vasectomy reversal surgery and women who have undertaken tubal ligation and are now considering a tubal reversal surgery can also go for IVF.

Low Sperm Count-

If the man has a low sperm count and low motility, the couple can opt for IVF, where it is easy to fertilise the eggs even if the sperm quality is poor.

Failed Intrauterine Insemination-

If the woman has previously tried out intrauterine insemination while attempting ovarian simulation that resulted in a failure of two to four cycles, IVF can prove to be a good option.

Increased Age -

If the woman is over 38 years of age, IVF can help her become a mother.

Reduced Ovarian Reserve -

If the woman suffers from reduced ovarian reserve where the quantity and quality of eggs are poor, IVF can help her out. In order to determine the egg quality three tests are required to be done:
  • FSH test
  • Estradiol test
  • Antral follicle counts
  • AMH hormone level test
These are the screening tests that ascertain the quality of eggs. The result helps the physician to determine whether an IVF would be fruitful or the woman requires IVF along with egg donation.
  • If the female is suffering from acute endometriosis, IVF can give positive results.
  • When there are unexplained infertility issues where every other procedure of artificial inseminations has not yielded any positive results. This entails that the standard fertility tests failed to provide the reason behind the fertility problem.

How Does IVF Improve Fertilisation?

The procedure enhances the efficiency of human reproduction which may not be naturally efficient per se. this happens through -
The multiple eggs are removed by this procedure and are cultured carefully for three to five days, when the eggs are fertilised. The best of the embryos are then transferred back to the uterus.
If there are remnant embryos, the couple has the option of freesing them for any possible future requirement.

So IVF Helps To:

  • The body is forced to produce multiple follicle and eggs. Through a natural menstrual cycle just a singular follicle with one egg happens to develop.
  • The eggs are taken out only when they are ready. The release and tubal pickup are assisted through IVF.
  • The lab atmosphere ensures natural fertilisation environment, thus maximising the chances of a successful procedure.
  • When the embryo is transferred, the best possible location is chosen that lies in the middle of the uterine cavity.

Low sperm count is quite common these days. But with IVF, it is possible to fertilise the eggs. It is also applicable even if the sperm quality is poor.

With more and more women opting for late pregnancies, IVF is a sure shot way of achieving that. Fertility declines with age but IVF can help in getting pregnant.
