Name: Kamala Country: India Comment: Being a septuagenarian, I wish to share what I have grown up with & myself observed on Gudhi Padava. A silk cloth is tied at the top of the "Gudhi'& it is decorated with tender stems of mango leaves and neem leaves (preferably with flowers & small fruits) and a flower garland. Then a copper pot ("Kalash") is placed upside down at the tip of the "Gudhi" & the "Gudhi" is tied to a pillar with the bottom of the "Gudhi" resting on a wooden plank. The Gudhi is kept in the part of the house ("Aangan"), where there's sunlight. The New year's "panchang" - almanac is placed on this plank and after doing the puja to the "Gudhi" - applying haldi, kumkum and akshata, etc., some sweet dish (Kheer or pooran poli) is offered along with coconut and banana, etc., as "naivedhya". After performing "Aarti" to the Sun and the "Gudhi", the person who performs the pooja sprinkles some akshata & flowers on the "panchang", offering prayers that the New Year bring prosperity and peace to all. The relevant portions of the almanac where the predictions relating to the monsoon, auspicious times to perform marriages or other functions, forecast affecting/benefiting people born under certain stars, etc. are read. The whole family gathers and listens to the predictions. Natural calamities and unseasonal rains or drought, etc., are very important for farmers, in particular. Children and women mostly wear new clothes. The festive food certainly consists, at least,of one sweet dish such as kheer; many households prepare pooran poli. But, most importantly, a sauce-like preparation called "gotjju" - (cooked with green mangoes, dried neem flowers, jaggery, green chillies, salt, tamarind and methi seeds) is prepared and consumed as the first item on the plate. The significance of this is that life (and the year ahead) would consist of all tastes/flavors - sweet, sour, salty, spicy, etc., and it should be accepted with equanimity. Families visit/call each other and exchange new year greetings. The older generations recited auspicious chantings to invoke the blessings of Gods/Nature (which I used to enjoy as a little girl). However, like most festivals in India, "Gudhi Padava" or "Ugadi" is celebrated in different ways by people in different states. Name: AAYUSHI MAKWANA Country: India Comment: VERY NICE ARTICLE.
