Celebrating Krishna Janmashtami with Kids

Celebrating Krishna Janmashtami with Kids

Krishna is often considered to be a jolly and playful God and thus many children like him very much. Read on and find how to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami with kids.

Legends and stories of Krishna describe him as naughty and playful, but very sweet and loving at the same time. Lord Krishna’s childhood was full of enthralling incidents and most of the Hindu parents do not miss telling stories of Krishna’s childhood to their kids. Little kids in India are often referred as ‘Bal Krishna’ by Hindus which make Janmashtami celebrations with kids significant.

Celebrating Janmashtami with kids can be really fun. You can celebrate with children and teach them more about Krishna at the same time in the following ways:

Telling Them Lord Krishna’s Stories

There are many nice stories and legends of Lord Krishna for telling children which can be really entertaining and interesting for them. You can take them to cultural programmes which are held in many places for Janmashtami. There are dances and performances held during cultural programmes which depict the life and stories of Lord Krishna. There are many stories of Krishna’s childhood which small kids will really enjoy.

Ask Them to Join You in Prayer

While doing the Janmashtami Puja or Abhishek, you can call your kids and ask them to sit with you. You can take them with you to Krishna temples and ask them to join you in celebrations where they sing Bhajans and songs of Lord Krishna. You can teach them special prayers of Lord Krishna.

Participating in Janmashtami Celebrations in School

Some schools have Janmashtami celebrations. For fancy dress competitions held around Janmashtami time, you can dress your children like Radha or Krishna. Schools can have activities such as pot making competitions for children or ‘Krishna crown making competitions.’ Encourage your children to take part in skits and dances held in schools for Janmashtami. Teachers and parents should encourage children to emulate the good qualities of little Krishna.

Janmashtami Celebrations at Home

Janmashtami in south is celebrated differently as compared to Janmashtami in north. In many South Indian households, people draw footsteps of Lord Krishna using rice flour. These footsteps are drawn to make it look as if Lord Krishna is entering the home. You can celebrate Janmashtami at home in simple ways with your children and tell them about the significance of the various activities during the festival. You can decorate the deities at home and prepare Lord Krishna’s favourite sweets. Ask your children to join you in the kitchen while cooking the special sweets and dishes which you prepare for Janmashtami.

Life and Appearance of Lord Krishna

Lord Krishna always emphasized on justice and truth. He always fought against evil. Lord Krishna’s teachings for humanity can be found in the holy Bhagwat Gita. Lord Krishna had dark skin and could always be seen playing the flute. He used to wear a crown with a peacock feather attached to it. Dressing up little children like Lord Krishna makes them look very cute.

You can celebrate Krishna Janmashtami in many more ways with children. You can buy DVD’S and books about Lord Krishna for your children. Krishna was very fond of eating butter when he was small. Sharing stories of Lord Krishna’s childhood pranks will draw children’s attention and help them feel more connected. Even those families who are not able to visit temples on Janmashtami can celebrate at home with family and children. You can also do a midnight Puja at home just like they do in temples. We have fasting and an elaborate puja on Krishna Janmashtmi. My kids also take part in this. Dahi handi should be celebrated in schools albeit in a small way so that kids of today's generation are away of the cultures and traditions.
