Ramzan Id

Ramzan is a holy month for Muslims. The last day which marks the end of Ramzan is Id-Ul-Fitr also known as Id-Al-Fitr or Ramzan Id. Shawwal which is a new Islamic month starts on this day.

During the entire month of Ramzan, Muslims fast rigorously with great faith and discipline. They eat and drink only before the sun has risen in the morning and after the sun has set in the evening. Dates are usually the first food eaten to break the fast. Some groups of people such as the sick, elderly, pregnant or mentally challenged can avoid fasting. It is a special time of the year for Muslims and they focus on fasting, prayer, community and helping others through charity work.

Ramzan Id is a religious holiday and millions of followers across the world celebrate this day with great jubilation. There is a joyous three day celebration.

How Do People Celebrate Ramzan Id?

Id celebrations begin with the sighting of the new moon which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan or Ramzan. Many Muslims celebrate on this day by wearing their best clothes and preparing delicacies at home. As per tradition, nobody fasts on this day. Greetings are exchanged and children may be given gifts. They start the day by visiting the mosque or attending an outdoor gathering for performing the Id prayer. After the sermon and prayer, they meet their neighbors, relatives and friends. They make phone calls to distant relations for wishing them. When people get together with their close ones, they share sweets, snacks and other dishes prepared specially for Id. They distribute food items such as barley, dates, raisins, etc to the poor people or engage in charity work by giving money to the poor. This is to ensure that even the needy can have a holiday meal and take part in the celebrations.

Public Life on the Day of Ramzan Id

In many Muslim countries, there is an official government holiday for Ramzan Id on all the three days and schools are closed. Government offices, some shops, post offices and other services remain closed on this day. Frequency of public transport is often reduced. As people socialize and go out a lot on this day, many areas experience traffic jams. Large prayer meetings are held and areas near mosques are often congested. During the entire month of Ramzan, public life slows down in general as people are observing fasts, however on the day of Ramzan Id there is great joy and celebration everywhere.

Background and Significance of Ramzan Id

Ramzan Id is one of the two major festivals in the Islamic calendar. Ramzan is the month when the holy Quran was revealed and people could receive guidance and strength from the teachings of the holy book. Fasting provides an opportunity to cleanse and purify the mind and body. Fasting for an entire month teaches people self control and they develop sympathy for the poor and hungry. It helps them to be more compassionate towards the less fortunate. They grow spiritually and undergo self transformation. People seek forgiveness and blessings from the Lord. The entire month of Ramadan holds special religious significance for Muslims and Ramzan Id is a very important day for them.
