How to Improve Child's Focus on Studies

How to Improve Child's Focus on Studies

Is your child able to pay attention in class? Read on to find tips for improving your child’s focus on studies.

Kids often find it difficult to sit at one place in class and listen to the teacher for longer time; they start day-dreaming, looking out the window, focusing on other unimportant noises, and they miss lessons, instructions, and directions from their teacher. These happen due to lack of concentration or when they are overloaded, overtired, or overstimulated, or due to physiological or psychological reasons. Kids sometimes struggle to focus on lectures, but finally fail to pay attention. This inability to control attention can be taken care of if you follow the various ways mentioned below.

Give Attention if You Want Them to Pay Attention

Kids need lots of attention. They do various things to draw attention of elders. The first time you introduce something to your kids, make sure you are explaining them what are the things with few details, so that they can pay attention and focus on the things. Clear instructions help your kids to focus. If you scatter your concentration and cannot come back in time, you cannot expect your kids to focus. Make eye contact with your kids by standing in front of them, touch their shoulders, make them feel your presence, and show them what they need to do.

Cut Down the Distractions

Check if your kids are hungry or combating fatigue. Kids should have enough food to concentrate and focus on their studies when they are in school, as hunger distracts. There should not be irrelevant noises where they will be sitting in the class. The places in the school should be away from music, sounds of vehicle horns, and other disturbing sounds. Also, ensure that your kids have enough play-time so that they should not be thinking of playing in the field while the class is going on. At home, disturbances like loud noise, music, TV, games, etc. should be kept away from them.

Avoid Overscheduling, Break the Tasks

Kids often find it hard to focus when they are overloaded with tasks and cannot figure out what to do and how to do. Also, when the task is too hard, they get distracted. Divide their tasks into smaller sections and allow them accomplish the tasks one by one. Set up a routine at home for homework, projects and assignments so that they can maintain a balance both school and home and concentrate better on what they are doing. Allowing frequent breaks between their tasks may help them to get refreshed and focus more.

Healthy Diet Improves Focus

Pack your kids’ lunch boxes with foods which help to boost their attention span. Foods which are rich in omega-3 (flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, salmon, sardines, mackerel, and walnuts), foods high in antioxidants (green tea, dark chocolates, berries, tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli), foods high in dopamine (ripe bananas, sunflower seeds, etc.) and foods abundant in fiber and vitamins B6 and B12 (fish, meat, nuts, eggs, whole grains, dairy and seaweed) are preferred.

Sleep Well and Exercise Daily

Sleep-deprived kids cannot focus and pay attention. Make sure your kids are sleeping well which relaxes their mind and boosts their focusing ability. Also, involve your kids into sports and keep a check that they exercise daily or spend at least one hour of a day in outdoor activities. Exercise opens the mind blocks, stretching helps blood circulation, yoga helps effective breathing – everything out together leads to healthy mind and thus better concentration ability in kids.
When you are teaching your kids how to focus better in school or any other task, make sure you are only not spreading your attention in multiple things and lacking in focusing. Kids look up to elders and practice what they see, which is more effective than what is taught manually. If you expect your kids to focus, you should be focused. If you expect your kids to eat healthy, you should be doing the same. You also should sleep well and exercise daily. Your behaviour and lifestyle will impact your kids more than anything else.

How do children get distracted? What are the ways to improve child’s focus on studies? How to encourage children to concentrate on what is taught at school? Discuss here.

Kids suffer because of the disturbances at home. So we should ensure that TV or music system is turned off and there is silence at home when kids are studying so that they can focus only on studies.

Diet plays an important role in helping children improve their focus on studies. I give one almond soaked in water daily to my child to boost his concentration.

Children should learn to focus on studies otherwise it is a waste to send them to school or tuition if they are unable to concentrate on studies.
