Home Remedies for Cough

Cough is one of the most common ailments that every one of us has experienced in our lives. Usually, you feel irritation in the air passage or feel a blockage there. To clear this blockage or irritation, one needs to cough. The brain sends the message that there is irritation in the upper airways which can be relieved by coughing.
There are many reasons behind occurrence of cough. For example you cough because of common cold, viral infection, flu or because of smoking, or other health problems like asthma, lung cancer, tuberculosis or others. Some of the symptoms of cough are congestion, irritation in the throat, chest pain and many more. If you are suffering from cough you can try the home remedies mentioned here instead of opting for over-the-counter treatments.

Simple Home Remedies for Cough

Have a quick look at the simple home remedies for treating cough.

Garlic

Garlic helps to strengthen immune system and contains antibacterial and antimicrobial component that helps in treating cough.

Recipe
You can make remedial syrup by boiling two to three cloves of garlic with a cup of water. Add a spoon of oregano to it and let it cool to room temperature. You can add a spoon of honey and drink it. This will ease your breathing and sooth your cough as well.
If you want instant relief, you can crush few cloves of garlic and add few drops of clove oil and honey to it before having it. Add garlic to your food and you will have additional health benefits of using it as well.

Turmeric

This is one of the most common herbs available in everyone’s kitchen. It has antibiotic effect and helps cure dry cough in particular. You can grind turmeric root to powder and take this powder after mixing with honey and water twice a day.

Recipe
Take a cup of water and add 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of carom seeds and boil till the volume becomes half. Add some honey to it and take this solution three to four times a day.

Ginger

This is one of the natural cures for cough that many of us know. Take small pieces of ginger and crush it slightly. Add this to water and boil. Take this solution to get relief from sore throat and non-stop coughing. Drink this solution four to five times a day. You can also chew small pieces of ginger to calm down cough symptoms.

Onion

Onion is also one of the best and easily available remedy for dry cough.

Recipe
Bake onions and add the juice to comfrey tea and honey and drink it.

Milk and Honey

Honey added to hot milk brings relief to dry cough. If you get chest pain due to continuous coughing, it will also subside. Take this before going to bed for better relief. Taking a spoonful of honey in empty stomach helps clear mucus and sooth your throat.

Carrot

Carrot has the necessary nutrients and vitamins that help in treating cough.

Recipe
Take out juice of 4 – 5 carrot and add water to it. Drink this juice four to five times a day. You are free to add small amount of honey to it.

Grapes

Eating grapes in natural form or taking juice out of some to consume helps improve the condition of lungs releases the mucus from parts of respiratory organs. You can add honey to grape juice before drinking.

Almonds

Almonds have special nutritional properties that help cure cough symptoms. Soak almonds overnight and make a paste of it. Add a little amount of butter and consume this mixture 4 – 5times a day.

I prefer home remedies only for treating cough and cold in my child. For cough I give juice of Tulsi leaves (basil leaves) along with honey. If this juice is feeded 3 times in a day for 2 day cough is easily cured.

I agree with you palak. Tulsi and honey are best for dealing with cough. I have a plant of Tulsi at home so I make use of it whenever my child had cough.
