remedies-for-cough in kids
Kids get affected with cough easily whenever there are changes in weather and it is easier to cope with such illnesses with home remedies. Have a quick look at the home remedies for cough in kids.
Your child may catch cough in every cold and flu season. It can be uncomfortable and irritating for your child if it is strong and continuous. Thinking of going to give your kid over-the-counter cough syrup or other medicines? Think twice before doing that, because in reality, over-the-counter drugs to treat cough and cold are not safe for children under 4-6 years of age. It comes along with many side-effects and can be seriously harmful for your child. So, look no farther than your kitchen, closet, or bedroom for safe and simple home remedies for cough and cold in kids.

Steamy Air Brings Relief

  • Breathing warm and moist air can stop a stuffy nose, loosen the mucus in the nasal passages, break up congestion, and thus soothe coughs.
  • You can run a hot shower in your bathroom by closing the door and thus turning it into a steam room. Sit in such atmosphere with your child or let him or her play there for at least 15 minutes.
  • You can also relax your child by giving a warm bath.
  • You can keep a cool-mist humidifier close to the bed without your child’s reach as dampness helps thinning mucus and shrinks nasal passages easing the breath. Make sure to clean the humidifier daily to avoid bacterial contamination.
  • You can add a few drops of menthol or eucalyptus oil in the bath water or vaporiser that will help your kid from feeling less congested.

Use Bulb Syringes or Saline Drops

Drops always help clearing the nose when kids are too young to blow their nose, and even saline drops help in doing the same.
  • You can use rubberized bulb syringes for clearing your child’s stuffy nose every few hours, before each feeding, or before bed. It works best for children below 6 years old.
  • Sometimes, your child may not like using the syringes, then place two to three drops of warm saline water in each nostril not more than 4 times a day. This will loosen dried mucus, and so you must gently swipe the nostrils with a cotton swab.
  • Gargling with salty water also soothes cough.

Vapour Rubs for Children above 3 Months

Vapour rubs produce a cooling sensation in the nose giving your child a nice sleep and time in bed helps your child’s body fight infection, so it is very necessary to have a nice sleep. Always remember, when your child is sleeping, he or she is healing.
  • Massage your child’s chest, neck, and back with a potent eucalyptus, camphor, and menthol vapour rub before sleep.
  • You can prepare these vapour rubs at home mixing a drop of eucalyptus, peppermint, and sage essential oils in olive oil or you can also get to buy these natural vapour rubs from stores.

Serve Fluids

Fluids like water, broth, and other clear liquids help preventing dehydration and clear your child’s nasal passages.
  • Serve your child fluids as they are more relieving like chicken soup, etc.
  • Eliminate dairy as it is not good during cough and cold.

Honey Does the Magic for Children above a Year

  • Honey soothes sore throat and calms cough.
  • You must give your child half-teaspoon of honey with little lemon squeezed in it as it adds vitamin C to catalyze the action.
  • Make sure that your child is a year old as otherwise it can cause infant botulism.

Your Child Will Recover Naturally

These are few home remedies that will shorten your child’s illness and make him or her feel a lot better. A cold or flu will usually take about 10 days to run its course, so you need to be patient and keep your child under your supervision. It may be disturbing that your child is suffering from cold and flu, but you must remember that it is the body’s way of trying to get rid of all the bugs that make him or her sick and clear out phlegm that clogs his or her breathing tract.
