Foods Kids Should Avoid During Winters

Kids should avoid eating certain foods during winters to stay healthy during this season. Let us take a look at the foods which kids should avoid eating during winters.

Christmas and New Year holidays may sound exciting as the winters approach, but you need to be a little more careful during these days when you prepare food for your kids. Winter may turn out to be saddening if your kids fall sick during this time. There are certain foods which you should avoid serving your kids to eat during winters.

Fried Foods

Deep fried foods – mostly the ones that are fried in fats and oils derived from animal products – can be a severe problem in kids during winters. Butter, omega-6 fatty acids, lard, and many other oils are actually prepared from animal products and they are known to cause thickening of saliva and mucus, so it is better to avoid such oily foods during winter. If your kids are still willing to enjoy some fries, make sure you use vegetable oils instead of animal oils.

Sugary Foods

Simple sugars are simply bad for your children during winter and during most of the time of the year. Too much of sugar in the body can reduce the count of white blood cells, exposing your kids’ bodies to viral and bacterial infections – they may easily thrive on your kids’ bodies if the protecting white blood cells are affected due to rise in sugar content in your kids. Avoid highly refined and processed chemical beverages, sodas, cold drinks, candies, chocolate, breakfast cereals, and many other processed food products.

Histamine-Rich Foods

Histamine is known to help your body fight allergies. But is it good for your kids to eat histamine-rich foods during winters? Well, not really. This is because histamine-rich foods induce mucus production, which can cause difficulty in swallowing food and other throat problems during winter. So, it is better to avoid such foods during winter, such as tomatoes, avocados, eggplant, eggs, mayonnaise, dried fruits, mushrooms, vinegar, yogurt, bananas, spinach, soy sauce, buttermilk, pickles, most citrus fruits, papaya, pineapple, smoked fish, strawberries, wheat germ, fermented foods, and many artificial preservatives and dyes used in foods.

Meat Products

Animal protein has been proved to have many detrimental effects in kids. One of the major reasons you should not give your kids meat to eat during winters is that meat contains bad proteins that can make situations worse during winters. Meats and eggs contain a lot of proteins that are not good for the throat of your kids as those proteins help in building mucus, which can be very irritating for your kid’s throat. Though fish and organic meat has fewer effects on this matter, but processed meats and eggs are the worst.

Dairy Products

Dairy products also contain animal proteins, which are not really recommended for your kids – at least during the winter days. Animal protein present in dairy products as discussed before induces thickening of the mucus. Do not ask kids to consume milk frequently, cheese, and cream during winters and mostly when they feel congested – the situation will only get worse. You must also avoid serving your kids cream-based soups and cream-based dips during winters. This is because not only animal protein plays a major role in thickening saliva and mucus, but it also makes swallowing difficult, causing a lot of trouble in your kids.
You must avoid non-seasonal foods during winters. Your kids may like corn on the cob, but think twice before offering that to your kid as it is a non-seasonal food and is best eaten during spring and summer. Similarly, other vegetables like asparagus should also be avoided during winter and you should wait for spring to use asparagus in your kids’ meals. Instead, use vegetables that are seasonal and thus good for your kids if they eat them in winter. Have a happy and a healthy winter!
